Turbo or Super
Alright, i know i am a noob 2 this forum (many people have already let me know) but i have been researching alot on the Subaru SVX....And it seems about 50/50 some people get turbos and some get supers.....i have determined it is pretty much a preferince thing. I was wondering is some1 could tell me the difference. CONSTRUCTIVE replies will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Turbo or Super
This really belongs in the Forced Induction forum. I've moved the thread there for you. I suggest you check out this forum as there's a lot of useful information and a lot of smart people in here. Also, check out the thread at the top titled Turbo Tech 101 & Turbo Vs Supercharger.
It will answer all your questions. If it doesn't, feel free to ask away. If you want my opinion then I would tell you turbo without a doubt. |

Re: Turbo or Super
since this is already moved, i might as well ask this first...
what is the whp limit on your stock tranny? i mean there is only so far a stock tranny can go before it needs a rebuild or shift kit. also a high rev tq converter would do you good for your awd. and onto the basis of super vs turbo. its been going on and on for ages. it really depends what you expect out of the car.

Re: Turbo or Super
What is the engine in your SVX?
Subaru has made turbo models of most of their cars for a long time. Chances are there are wrecker parts which could fit a turbo on there without much fabrication. |

As for turbo or super, turbo for sure, but many say supercharger is the way to go for an SVX.

Re: Turbo or Super
Yeah the whp isnt good at all on the stock SVX. I THINK it is around 160whp. But i am not planning on adding any sort of extreme boost like a Turbo or so until i have atleast alot more screw ons. I am the second owner of this car, and the first owned said that they had just got the tranny redone b4 we had bought it. The stock SVX engine is a 6cyl btw. Yeah, after reading several post on this forum, i have pretty much choosen turbo's > Super's just from what i have read, but that is in the very distant future.

Re: Turbo or Super
Well i only mentioned super cuz the supercharger package available for the SVX generates boost at idle so you get low end power, unlike turbo. I would just build up the engine in preparation for boost as its most likely the most effective thing you can do in terms of "bolt-ons", and that's not really "bolt-on."

Re: Turbo or Super

superchargers produce full boost at top rpm, a turbo can produce full boost as low was 2,000rpm (sometimes lower, sometimes higher. it depends on sizing/application) and often can hold full boost as far as the engine can rev. superchargers are regarded as better in some applications because there's no lag, whereas often turbos can suffer some lag.

Re: Turbo or Super
Quote:
Positive displacement type (roots etc) which pump a fixed volume every stroke. Centrifugal type which look like the compressor side of a turbo. The centrifugal type behaves like StraightSix said above. The positive displacement pump the same amount of air per rev regardless of engine speed. Positive displacement superchargers will kill your fuel economy, whereas a turbo or centrifugal supercharger will only really kill your fuel economy when you're using the boost. Building a petrol engine to take boost forces you to take compromises which hurt efficiency and fuel economy anyway (like lowered compression). |
