Is this a good price for new brakes?

Local mechanic told me he would install new brake pads and rotors for $150. Is this a good price??

Re: Is this a good price for new brakes?

Depends on if you are not comfortable doing this yourself and if your car really needs new rotors. Brakes are pretty simple to replace if you have the tools and the ability. Figure parts would run you about $30 per rotor probably (depends on the year, which you didn't mention) and about $40 for a better set of brake pads than what the shop will use.

For the effort being performed at a shop, $150 is fair. If this is for front and rear pads and rotors, and you need pads and rotors, that is a great price.

I would pay $150.00 for someone to replace or resurface my rotors and replace the pads if I was not able to do it myself.

Re: Is this a good price for new brakes?

I say its a good deal

Brakes cost about $30
Rotors cost like $20 each X4.

So thats about $30 on labor.

Although have you checked about brake shoes? the back brakes or whatever?

I believe that would be "Rotors cost like $20 each x2" since she seems to be getting the front brakes done only.

Rotors: $40
Pads: $25 (assuming they are using semi-metallic)
--------------
Parts: $65 Which leaves about $85 for labor. A rip off in this area. Most garages chanrge about $100 to do front brakes. $85 for labor is a lot when it basically takes less than an hour to do.

You don't find many tech's that work for $30. an hour and I'd get the bid in writing showing exactly what is to be done itemized parts and labor. Understand, there are three flavors of pads, good, better & best asnd if I were you I'd want to do the better ones anyway. Most places around here turn the rotors and replace pads front and back for $200 or less.
