Wanting the unattainable

Why do I always want what I can't have??? Sure, I am well-grounded and realize that I will never attain half of what I want, but why do I still want it anyway??? Additionally, why do I dismiss what is blatantly offered to me in order to seek that which is out of my reach???

Sure, it's a basic human reaction, but why can't anyone ever seem to overcome it??? Should it not be a part of evolution to leave these sorts of things behind???

I know how you feel.

The more unobtainable the "object" the more you must have it.

You dismiss what is offered because it is too easy and in general people love a challenge. Think of how good you would feel if you managed to acquire one of these "unobtainable" objects.

But my unobtainables are truly UNobtainable. I have a better chance at becoming a Broadway singer than of getting what I want. Yet I am presented with a BETTER option, readily available, and I refuse to take it.

Sorry Tangie can't help ya there.

I guess it is just a matter of time for you to realise where you have been going wrong (wanting the unobtainable) and begin to persue the easier more obtainable path.

hope that helps

As for wanting the unobtianable, I really can't help you Tangi, only to say that you need to take a real close look at what is with in your reach, and maybe think strongly about going for it.
Or prehaps find away to make the unobtiable, obtianable. After all if you really want something bad enough then you will find away of getting it.

The unobtainable is far more desirable when faced with the realities of what you can achieve today.I'd dearly love a fast and shiny car,and a fast and shiny lifestyle to go with it,but of course,in my daydreams there is no room for crippling insurance or the constant fear of knocks and scratches....my perfect car comes in its own perfect little world where everything is guarranteed happy ever after, with no unsightly scratches or unexpected component failures. My real car on the other hand is tatty, slow and dull...but at the end of the day,Ican put my hands on it and say that it's mine,I've got it,and it works, more or less.

I'm never going to stop wanting my dreams, and there's always the distant possibility that they could come true, but the question would have to be,if all of my dreams were granted to me tomorrow, would I be able to handle the full reality of my wishes?Perhaps if I work slowly towards my goals, instead of hoping for a miracle,I'll be better placed to handle the unobtainable if I ever get there.

I'd say thats pretty normal. Desire is a normal human emotion its only a matter of being realistic and striving hard to reach one attainable goal after another until you reach your ultimate ones.

Again, we always think we can do one better.

I think its not a matter of overcoming it, its a matter of controlling it. I have things I want to do and possess, and I dont dismiss any of them. I only need to stick with my plans, keep reaching certain targets and keep my desires under control when something else rears its head.

Maybe getting more focused on a specific goal would help set the pace for grander and far off ones.

Desire and Hope is what keeps us going, well in my case it is.

I want lots of things, but I'm so far off the mark in terms of getting them at the moment. I guess only some of them are unobtainable.

It's probably because in some moods I can be quite cynical, so my rational mind turns away things that are unobtainable. So that I'm more realistic. There are some things though that I would love but know I could never have.

I think we all want things that we can’t have. Even when do obtain some of the things that we have desired in the past we then want more. I doubt that there is even one person who has absolutely everything that they want.

It was a poor attempt at a PA joke. Sorry... I guess the smiley wasn't able to convey it well. My apologies... :o

Anyhoo, I'm from south of the city. I live down near Canonsburg (not far from Iceoplex at Southpointe).

Again, I am sorry my joke offended you.
