okokok... Headers

Alright. Pulled the headers off. They're rusted all to hell. Savable, but a lot of work.

Should I:
1. See if I can find someone to sand blast them for me, then paint them myself.
2. Do it all myself - REALLY don't want to.
3. Buy new.

If I buy new, do I get ceramics, or plain olds? Ceramics are $330, plain olds run about $100. Leaning towards getting plain olds due to cost, but I heard that they peel and rust up almost immediately. If anyone has headers that were the black paint kind can you tell me how long they lasted before they looked like crap... I'd appreciate it.

Also, can you paint the plain olds over top of the black finish (when they're new) or will that just peel off too - or worse yet make the other peel quicker?

Any help?

Re: okokok... Headers

I got the pacesetter LT headers painted black. When I do the head and cam swap this winter I am getting new headers to go on it and am getting the ceramic coated. They from what I hear don't rust and will look better under the hood. Mine look your buddy ate a bunch of brussle sprouts and farted and shitted all night.

Re: okokok... Headers

The last headers I bought were painted black but I had them ceramic coated at a shop here in town before they were installed. Saved about $50 this way but next time I'll probably just buy them already coated. Had a choice of silver or black coating. They looked good for the 3 years I had them.

Re: okokok... Headers

I was about to add that you could get them coated if you can find a shop that does that. Here in the lil town I live in no way.

Re: okokok... Headers

Painted ones are crap. They 'high temp' paint will flake off very quickly and they will show signs of rust within a month. Save yourself the time and worry and get the ceramic coated ones. They will last longer, keep heat contained better, and look better.

Re: okokok... Headers

Well... shit. Now I gotta wait another month or so to finish up. Maybe I'll order the gauges first and get the wiring sewed up while I save up the cash for the headers.

Thanks fellas.

Re: okokok... Headers

MA! HE'S MAKING FUN OF ME AGAIN.

Lol... If I've got it out, might as well fix what needs to be fixed while the fixin is easy (as you have said 1000 times). If I only have to do it once, I'd rather do it right the first time, so it'll cost me $350, it's worth $350 if I'll never have to F with the headers again.

AND I like my maro to look good while it's blowing everyone's doors off. She's gonna be one sexy beast when (if, lol) I get her all sewed up.

My hookers were painted black and you could smell the paint burning off...nostalgic, but after awhile it got annoying. Get the ceramics.

Son of a bitch A chick pimp who paints her hookers black The white ones don't fetch too well on the East coast huh?

Alright alright,

Jim, me personally, i'd go with $100 ones and be done. If they start to look like junk a few years down the raod, "I paid a hundred bucks, I got what I payed for"

I figured I'd go that route, but then if they look THAT bad, I'll have to pull the engine again to get the ceramics on there. Then again, maybe I just do the plain-olds for now, and then do the ceramics in a year or so and upgrade to a hydraulic brake booster and get new steering pump, etc. Hmmmm.... (We need a scratching head smiley.)

I still don't see how your headers can be so hard to get out (insert scratching head smiley).

Re: okokok... Headers

Just get the ceramic coated ones. Besides being pretty and resisting rust longer, they keep underhood temps down and increase exhaust flow velocity out of the heads. Go ceramic...the first time.
