2002 Trooper

I recently purchased a 2002 Trooper. I haven't seen much posted on that model year so I am hoping that is a good sign. However, my CEL light came on so I took the truck to AutoZone and the computer said it was an Emissions Control System leak. The guy checked the gas cap and tightened it but the light is still on. I will have to end up taking the truck to the dealership I am sure, but does anyone have any ideas what else this might be? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also does anyone know where I can purchase an owner's manual?

Re: 2002 Trooper

it is most likely a bad intake manifold gasket. Very very common (I've had mine replaced twice).

the only issues on some troopers is that they use a lot of oil. So trooper owners use some much (+1qt per 1k) that they run the engines out of oil.

read up on the FAQ's. There is a link in the FAQ's for a downloadable version on the manual.

Just tightening the cap doesn't always work. You must also clear the code. This has happened to my wife in the past and even though we tightened the cap the light stayed on. The easiest reset is to open the fuse box next to the battery under the hood. Remove the ECM fuse for 10 sec then replace. If it was the gas cap the CEL will turn off.

Unhappy Re: 2002 Trooper

Thanks for the help with that issue. We put an octane booster in and filled the tank up and either that did the trick or the code reset itself because the light is off. Now, I have a new issue. The other night the interior lights (except for the ones on the dash and the stereo) and the clock went out and my keyless entry no longer works. We have tried to check the fuses but can't get them out. Any suggestions on this issue? I am beginning to think this car wasn't such a great investment.

Thanks

Re: 2002 Trooper

1st off - welcome to Isuzu's - I have absolutely cherished the 3 I've had the luxury to own.

2ndly - you're gonna have some flukes/flaws on a 5yr old truck, it isn't brand-new.

Regarding the octane booster, if you're having to add this, probably better off putting in 87 or higher octane, and/or your spark plugs could need to be changed and EGR cleaned, if it's pinging. Both of these are very simple, fairly inexpensive tasks that can be done by the common home mechanic.

In other words, you don't need the octane booster if the truck is running right.

In regards to the lights/key less entry, I've heard some comment that the keyless entry system could be to blame, but could also be weak voltage, i.e. low battery or alternator output.

I don't have the keyless entry system on my 10yr old Rodeo, and haven't experienced issues with it on my 5yr old Rodeo Sport, as of yet. So, I'm not quite sure on that.

But, I do know, that if the volt output is low, by either the battery or the alternator, these trucks will give off very weird symptoms.
