Dont laugh, but I just bought a 24 year old car that came from Minnesotta (I live in TX). You guessed it.....rust on top of rust. Anyways, it runs and drives well with a few exceptions.
A. The choke light will not go out. I purchased a new choke thermostat and made sure the wire was securely plugged in, and also made sure all the linkage and vacuum operated selonoids were moving freely. The light is steady when you first start it up for the day (cold), but once it gets warm while driving it flickers. Any ideas suggestions? B. I want to change my rear differential fluid but cant seem to locate the screw on the side of the differential. The only thing I see is a plastic piece on the very top that has a cap on it that dont seem to pop off. Ideas, suggestions?? Thanx in advance......more questions to come, I'm sure. |

Re: 1983 Camaro Berlinetta, V6...choke light
Found this http://www.geocities.com/vtcamaro/Pi...rams/pg182.jpg but it says it is for an 85.
This diagram suggests that the relay may be your issue. //2000CAYukon |

Re: 1983 Camaro Berlinetta, V6...choke light
If memory serves, the choke light should be on during 'warm-up' and then go out. Might be flickering due to a wiring issue elswhere in the harness?

Update......
I printed up a vacuum diagram for this car and motor. Replaced some vacuum hoses and made sure they were all in the proper place/order. The choke plate will close completely with the car off and gas pedal pressed, but once you crank the car up, both the primary and secondary pulloff's will completely purge, pulling the choke plate open almost all the way which causes the idle to drop off and motor to stall (unless you hold the gas pedal down while warming it up). I tried turning the elect. choke one way and the other to see if it would make a difference, but it dont. I also tried to locate any kind of adjustment for the pulloff's, but again unsucessful. The choke light will stay on steady way after the car gets warm and the elect. choke has opened the plate up all the way, the light never goes out. I need more thoughts and ideas on why the pulloff's are opening the choke plate way too much and if and how there is a way to adjust them. Again, I have made sure all vacuum lines are not leaking and in the proper order. |

Check the charging system.

Re: 1983 Camaro Berlinetta, V6...choke light
Well, I kinda sorta fixed the problem.....
I found that with the elect choke thermostat is on the carb, the choke light will remain on....but when you take it off the carb, the choke light goes out. Also, with the thermostat off the carb it will read 12 volts all the time, but when you place it back into the carb, the voltage drops to 2 volts all the time. My "jerry riggin" fix.....I placed some black elect tape around the choke thermostat to keep it from making contact with the metal portion of the carb. It now gets 12 volts with it on the carb and the choke light goes off. From time to time, it will flicker after the motor is hot.....not sure what to do about that. As for the charging system, everything seems to be in order.....the alternator is pushing 13-14 volts, the volt meter on the dash reads 13-14 volts and there is no "check engine" light lit up either. |
