97 mali - removing ignition switch - interlock cable problems

Hello,

The key of my 97 malibu LS 3.1 will not turn whatsoever. To me it seems to have something to do with the ignition interlock, or the tumblers.

I've taken everything apart (that needs to) to take the ignition switch out, but I'm running into two problems:

1) after pressing the tab for the interlock cable, the cable will come loose (the clip is disengaged), but the actual cable is still stuck inside the ignition. I cant seem to get it to come out.

2) I can't remove the two wire connector, because I can't get the switch into the run position.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Try gently raking the tumblers with the key as you turn it. They're on the top of the lock. If this works it's most likely a worn key or worn tumblers.

If it was the interlock cable I think you'd probably have gotten it loose by now with all that movement.

I had a similar problem and a new key cut from the VIN did the trick.

I'm not sure if there's a trick to pulling an ignition switch without a functioning lock cylinder, other than breaking it anyway.

I ended up needing the cylinder drilled. I took it to a mechanic.

The aftermarket manual I read wasn't right either. The interlock cable will NOT come out if you do not have the key in run. It said that it would. Also, it's easier to get to if you take out the radio instead of the whole instrument cluster. Oh yeah. I'm glad I borrowed the book from the library instead of buying it. That way I had more money to pay the mechanic's bill. I should have taken it there in the first place on this one.
