Outback Tires

I live in Alaska where road conditions are crazy. Everyday I go snowboarding or surfing with 3 buddys in the car and we hit a patch of extreme terrian. My three buddys pipe in "ahh...the subie cant handle this, we should took my truck." My Outback amazes them every time.

The problem is my tires are going bald. I was wondering what is the best tires for extreme driving conditions.

Stock tires are P225/60R16. for a 2002 outback. If I switch rims to 15's could I run BFGoodrich all terrian truck tires and still be ok with handling and ABS ?

Anyways thanks for the help.
