A/C Compressor not working properly

The clutch on my air conditioning compressor only engages when I run a jumper wire directly from the battery to the compressor. I tried filling the system and the gauge on the can reads the proper pressure. The clutch is not engaged (and does not engage) as the system is being filled. Any ideas??
Thanks,
Jim

A word of caution.
To proper recharge a air condition you need a gauge set with high and low gauges.
If your system is out of R-134 or very low you need to look for and repair leaks.
Do not fall for or use them the wal-mart recharge kits killer kits with the stop leak and oil crap.
Only use the R-134a if your system is R-134.

If compressor is not kicking in check for gas or pressure in the system.
They have a low presser cut out switch.
That has to have over 30 lbs of pressure to turn on compressor.

You need 12 volts to one side of switch from AC control switch if not you will need to check AC controls and or fuse.
Then check for voltage going threw switch to AC compressor coil.
About your year they had some wiring plug in problems at the pressure switch. Check it out good if your are losing 12 volts in that area.

To get system to take R-134a if it is out you can jump the switch to get R-134a started in system.
If your system is low jumper switch and get a can in it and see if it will kick in on it own.

Do you have any flashing lights on your control panel?
If so you may have to do a battery disconnect to reset the AC controls after you get some gas in it.
If your system R-134a?

Re: A/C Compressor not working properly

Thanks for the replies. I do have 134a (95 blazer, Vortec, Vin W). I did try to fill with one of those cans from Wal-mart (oil/stop leak/134a) so I'll try just a regular can of 134a. I don't have any flashing lights on the A/C control panel. I'll check the power at the control switch and in between the switch and the compressor coil. Thanks again.

Re: A/C Compressor not working properly

Be glad you did not get it in there.
That is bad stuff. I checked some yesterday and it is awful nasty smelling stuff.
The easy place to check for power is low pressure switch on receiver dryer can.
Good luck
