Question Manual or Automatic

Can anybody tell me the REAL difference between buying a manual or auto tranny. Everyone says "get a Manual" but no one can tell me why. Is there a difference when it comes to tuning your car?

Also, What sort of tuning invalidates a warranty?

Thanks.

Arrow manual vs. auto.

manual transmission gives you more top-end power and will allow you to have alot more fun in your car. with automatic you will recieve better acceleration but less on your top end.:bandit:

also any tuning such as using aftermarket parts or performance parts invalidates your warrenty. pretty much any tuning that changes the stock parts on your car will invalidate your warrenty:smoker2:

Exactly.. Plus in my opinion auto tranny's are generally weaker than a manual, meaning you have to put more $$ into them(beef them up) to get them to last when you start ragging on them a lot or tuning your engine, and also cost a lot more to replace.
Auto tranny's have more parasitic losses, meaning they reduce the overall horsepower output of your car, but off the line the torque converter makes up for that by giving you greater acceleration. Over the course of a quarter mile the manual tranny cars generally run like 0.15 - 0.2 seconds faster than the same car with an auto.(for my gen cavy anyway)

Ahhh I understand... Thanks for the info.

So is it worth it to get a manual conversion? Is it even possible in my car?

ok buy a manual becoze:
1. u have 5 speeds (instead of 4)
2. u have more power on the engine
3. when u "kick down" u can leave the RPM to the maximum
4. less fuel consumption
5. more fun!

For skilled drivers, automatics also have the annoying habit of upshifting just as you're braking for a corner, which means a) you have less ability to balance the car on the throttle before your apex, and b) your acceleration out of the corner will be about 7/10 of a second late, as you're wating for the useless pig of a transmission to kick down to the proper gear.

F*cking gimp transmissions. Useless.

an automatic gear box controls the car's speed in some way
when u have a manual gear box, u r the ruler of the car
and for burnouts, peel outs, donuts, a manual gear box is suggested.

It's possible, but it's not the easiest thing in the world. There is more work involved than I think it is worth. There is a how-to conversion article for 2nd gen cavaliers on www.v6z24.com . That will let you see what type of work is involved if you are really interested.

from the crank to the wheels you have drivetrain loss. An automatic has more loss than a stick so if you get a stick you are getting more power to wheels. thats why they are quicker, unless you are a bad driver.
