Check Engine? Can I do this myself?

My check engine light came on a few days ago in my 2004 Cavalier. Is this something I can check myself pretty easily? I don't notice anything wrong with the car at all, it's running fine. Any suggestions on how I might save myself time and money?

Re: Check Engine? Can I do this myself?

could be as simple as the gas cap being not on tight, but as stated above get it scanned. Before you start replacing parts ,if it emissions related check for warrnaty.

Re: Check Engine? Can I do this myself?

First I checked my gas cap, I took it off and made sure it was put back on tight, then I went to Autozone and they hooked it up and said there was a small leak in my emissions system. Well...yesterday my check engine light went off! Hopefully it was just the gas cap. Should I still get it checked out or is it fine? Thanks so much for your help, I was about to waste 60 dollars to have someone check it out for me. You guys are amazing

Re: Check Engine? Can I do this myself?

well most places will check it out for free so i would go have it checked just to be sure cause small problems turn to big problems. so just go in and state that your check engine light was on and it said emission leak and have them check it out just to be safe i know that is what i would do.

Re: Check Engine? Can I do this myself?

It is an `04 , with an emissions problem . Go back to dealer and ask if it is covered under WARRANTY, heck if one says no then ask another .......lol. Some stuff is covered for a longer period of time than just the usual stuff and the way everyone is all worked up about the enviroment now it may still be covered. Good Luck
