Completed: Fujimi 1969 Gulf GT40

Just finished this one up. Painted with MCW Gulf Blue. The stripe was painted with Testors Grabber Orange Lacquer, cleared with Tamiya TS-13 clear. The black pinstripe separating the orange and blue was trimmed from the kit decal and placed on the car. All of the other decals are kit decals but the roundells are placed over top of a more opaque white roundel cut out of some plain white decal sheet. I added the front center light, and the black around the top edge of the windows and tape around the headlight covers to replicate pictures of the real car from LeMans in 1969. The wheels were masked with Ambroid Liquid Mask and sprayed with the same Grabber Orange as the stripe.

The car was built to replicate the car just before the race as part of a project with "Zoom Zoom" (Bob Downie). Bob's will replicate "after the race".

Since it was a pretty basic out of the box build I didn't see a need for a WIP thread.

Thanks for looking.

Re: Completed: Fujimi 1969 Gulf GT40

Man that is a nice GT40! Is it a Fujimi? i have been eying this car for a while. I really want to build one like this. Looks great!!!

You have my curiosity now about the liquid mask. I bought the micro sol brand of liquid mask and have never used it because it is water based. Did you have any issues with it?

Re: Completed: Fujimi 1969 Gulf GT40

Been toying with the idea of pulling one of my GT40's out to start working on something again, your build makes me even more convinced I need to do so.

Excellent build Eric, thanks for sharing

The only thing "basic" about this is that it's basically perfect!!

Beautiful build

I'd like to ask a couple of stoopid questions.

1. The chrome effect on the wheels is something I dream of being able to achieve but never have come close to that. What do did you use? Even with Alclad over enamel base I don't get that kind of shine and anyway it nearly always rubs off

2. How did you cut the roundel decals so perfectly? Plotter?

Thanks and congratulations again.

Enzoenvy, the liquid mask I used is also water based. I thinned a little bit of it with water and applied it with a brush to the part I wanted to remain unpainted, after it dried I applied a thicker (unthinned) coat of the liquid mask over the first coat also with a brush, then sprayed the orange spokes in three light coats of paint. Once the paint had tacked up a little I removed the mask with tweezers. The result wasn't perfect and still required some touch up of orange with a paint brush but it still looks better than brush painitng the entire orange area.

Klutz, no such thing as a stupid question.
I wish I could claim fame to painting the silver on the wheels but that's the semi-chrome plating that came on them. The only part of the wheels I painted was the orange centers. However, if I can ever figure out how to make any kind of paint look like the chrome I'll certainly share it with everyone.

The roundel was cut by using the Kit decal as a pattern. I first cut out the kit roundel decal as closely as possible to the white edge. Then placed that roundel on the back of (paper side) of a white decal sheet and traced the kit roundel 4 times making 4 circles on the backside of the decal paper. I simply cut the new roundels by following that circle on the back of the decal sheet and applied as usual.

Ken, yep pretty much out of the box with the exception of painting the orange instead of using the decals and adding the front center light and black sunshade around the windows. I built the Sebring #2 GT40 several months ago. I love the GT40 and have built more GT40's than any other car. All in all, between the ones built for me and other people, probably about 15 to 17 versions in all.

Thanks again guys....

All the orange matches but I don't think I used the correct orange . Old pictures are hard to judge by since the color photos of the car during the actual race are obviously questionable due to their age. However, in the color pics of the real car the orange stripe and orange on the "Gulf" decal appear to be the same. In black and white pictures of the car the "gulf" decal appears darker than the stripe.

Either way, I don't think my orange is the correct orange but once masked and painted with nice clean paint separation I wasn't about to repaint it again.

I'm sure it looks different on everyones computer monitor also.
