18g turbo ?

What is the size and performance of an 18g turbo as opposed to a big 16g or and evoIII gt. There is a guy with a gsx around here that has been talking shit to my buddy with an 88 5.0 mustang gt about how his 18g (with only exhaust and an uicp) Would pull away from a 5.0 gt with 373 gears, exhaust intake, and some other stuff. I drove the mustang a few days ago and i know for a fact that it would walk away from my car and is probably a high 13's or so. This guy is so confident that he will beat the mustang becuase all he has to do is "turn a screw" (his boost controller) and he wont be able to keep up. Im kinda torn because of it being another fellow turbo dsm but he does nothing but talk shit and not back it up. I told him last night in front of his girlfriend that i would pay him a hundred bucks if he beat him and if he doesnt then noone owes anything. Just to get him to shut up, but he trailed off and bitched out. So what im wondering is, how good of a turbo is the 18g compared to others...

Re: 18g turbo ?

I glanced at the flow charts for those turbos and from what I can tell the 18g is between the 16 & 20g turbos. No doubt this turbo is capable of putting down some pretty high numbers but he will need alot more mods than that if he is going to run this turbo.

Re: 18g turbo ?

18g's are good for ~400hp give or take but if all he has done is what you listed he'll be lucky to be putting out 200whp.

Re: 18g turbo ?

i pondered over this very question much when i was newer to this car. if you can dig up the numbers the EVO3 B16g is just a hair under it. if very rusty memory works, it's like a max of 42 lb/min on the EVO and 45 on the 18g. but that is the upper limit, and heavily modded to boot.

GReddy are the ones pushing the 18g and the kit was a nice penny, the other factor in the buy or not buy question. the chances of coming across a cheap one is not likely. it is also C.A.R.B Legal and you are paying for that too.

ebay search for 18g turbo

and i have only ever seen this thing with a full blown kit.

ask to see under the hood, make up something like 'i want to see how you fit it in your car' and see if he will pop the hood.

my guess is that he is full of BS. the likelyhood of having an 18g is extremely rare. in fact i have never met a DSM guy with one. in more fact i have never seen any car with one, nor even heard of anyone wih one. i do know a guy at a tuner shop i used to frequent many years ago that had one and was trying to push it on me every chance he got. too bad for him i was on here doing my research!

Re: 18g turbo ?

It's doubtful, but we can't really be "sure" unless you take a look at it, that'll be the only way to tell if he's lying or not.

Re: 18g turbo ?

Yep, he has yet to actually run it though. From what I hear, an 18g has the power of an Evo II 16g, lag of a 20g.

Re: 18g turbo ?

it is right in between, but the positives don't push it over the edge. a properly tuned EVO3 would blow it out because of the lag involved and the powers being very much the same with equal tuning.

the only one that would is that with the GReddy kit it's CARB legal. everything else is deemed illegal by V.C. [truth be told anything that is not stock is not legal, but this turbo has a placard right on it and paperwork deeming it acceptable, but there is nothing on damaging a warranty]

i call major BS until you see it for yourself, then get a picture [with yourself in the pic with dude's chick in a skirt, etc] of it and post it here...

that is exactly right... that turbo is either useless or pointless depending on how you look at it

Re: 18g turbo ?

So as luck would have it, I was riding with my friend in his 5.0 yesterday afternoon after we got done working out and we see the guy with his girlfriend at a gas station putting air in his tires. So we pull in and got to talking. I was like perfect time man, still light out we got a perfect place. He's like its not worth it, ill kill you. Im like fine then lets do it and put some money down. He's like no its not worth it.

WHY WOULD IT NOT BE WORTH IT TO WIN MONEY!!! I told him I would pay him 20 bucks just to race us and he was acting like his car would blow it away. I then reminded him on how he got beat by a stock srt4 that my friend that works at a ford dealership was bringing to the gas station to get gas in. (My buddy in the srt4 is not good at shifting fast and still managed to stomp him) Then the guy says how stock srt4's have like 260 hp and like 280 lbs of torque. I was just like dude you are retarded.

Then hes like, dont you have the same car as me? And im like yeah, but I dont think its a fucking race car. And i know for a fact i would run away from him too.

I just dont get how someone can talk all that shit and then when it comes down to it he wont back it up at all, just keeps talking more shit. It is honestly hard to explain just how ridiculous it is but if you guys were there you would shit a brick!

Re: 18g turbo ?

Your right guys, I do have an a Greddy 18g that I got for a hell of a deal on ebay. Its practically brand new and should be a damn nice turbo on my setup. It's the better one of the 18g models.

Re: 18g turbo ?

You should have told him to prove it and pop the hood. Then you would have known for sure.

Re: 18g turbo ?

how can you tell right away by just looking at it, does the 18g say it on it? And if he did have it, do you think he even stands a chance with just exhaust and and uicp and boost controller against the 373 geared 5.0?
