96 caprice brake light problem

I have a 1996 chevy caprice, it's the police package. i have an alarm on it and an automatic starter and i want to know of any of that interferes with the brake light system. my brake lights aren't working. i know the bulbs are good b/c i was playing around with the wires near the brake pedal and plugged something into something else??????? i wish i could tell you more but either way that made my brake lights go on, but then they wouldn't go off until i unplugged that piece again. i checked the fuse and it was fine. please help, i don't know much about cars but i will try anything

Re: 96 caprice brake light problem

Welcome Aboard!

Reconnect the wiring the way it was originally. Test for constant battery power at the orange wire at the brake pedal switch. If there is no power, check the STOP/HAZ fuse in the interior fuse panel. If there is power, make sure both the white wires get power when the brake pedal is depressed. If there is no power on the white wires with the pedal depressed, check the switch. If there is power on the white wires, check the turn signal/hazard flasher switch. One of the white wires goes directly to the center high mount brake lamp, while the other operates the brake lamps through the turn/haz switch.
