Runs Great for 15-20 minutes then fuel dump ?
1989 Full size Blazer with 350 stock motor 66,000 original miles. The engine starts very easily and runs excellent for the first 15-20 minutes. After that it starts to loss power with alot of black smoke/soot coming from the exhaust. The engine stalls and cannot be restarted until it sits for an hour or so. It is for some reason dumping an excessive amount of gas after the initial 15-20 minutes. Any advise is much appreciated...

Sounds like the coolant temperature sensor is done. Is there the check engine light on?

Yes. The check engine light is always on. Before and after the problem starts. How hard is it to change this sensor? Thanks Mike...

Re: Runs Great for 15-20 minutes then fuel dump ?
Here is a site to pull the trouble codes. Just need a paper clip and it will tell you if it is the sensor or not.
The sensor is easy to change...20 minute job. And it is cheap too! The sensor is near the thermostat. Just drain some coolant and take the old sensor out, put the new one in, refill the coolant and your done. When mine went I didn't even drain the coolant....If your fast enough you won't loose to much through the hole ![]() Mike |

Re: Runs Great for 15-20 minutes then fuel dump ?
Mike, Thanks for your help, you hit it right on the head. The code was 15 (coolant temp/low temp.). I changed out the sensor for $10.50 and reconnected the battery. She runs fine and the check engine light is out.
Saved me some bucks for sure.... Paul |
