Question Cat. Converter

Well, I got away with no cat. converter for two years... But now I have to install the new converter I bought a couple years ago when I replace my exhaust from the crossover pipe back. I bought the Ocelot cat. back system w/out tips and used my original tips. For the cat.conv. they sent me a new converter and a head pipe that I needed to cut to fit in the converter. Well, I decided NOT to put the converter in and just use that straight head pipe since it bolted right onto the cat. back system.

Inspection time. In MA. you have to have an emissions test every other year and I was failed right out of the shute because I had no cat. conv. It would figure the one time I go I get the smart mechanic that was tipped off just by the sound of my engine. Which sounded pretty bad ass
So now I have to install it. My confusion is that the converter itself has shielding on one side. Which side does the shielding face when installed? The engine? The firewall?
