ran out of gas, wont start

01 ranger 3.0 ran out of gas now it wont start. I turn on the ignition and the pump runs 3 sec. Haynes book says that the pump runs until it builds pressure (about 3 seconds) I have a fuel pressure gage on the schrader valve but it reads 0. The fuel filter is new and the truck ran perfect prior to runing out of gas. I remove the fuel tank and see that the pressure regulator is in the tank with the pump. it looks like the regulator controls the return flow of fuel back to the tank. therefore I assume there must be a pressure sensor in the system so when the pump builds line pressure in 3 seconds the sensor tells the pump to stop, but how can it because I have no pressure at the gage on the schrader valve. if i dont have any pressure why would the pump stop. if the pump was bad it wont build pressure and should continue to run?? I have two Rangers so i tested the pressure on the other Ranger at the schrader value during the 3 second run and it reads 60lbs on the good truck so i know there should be pressure during the 3 second. I would just replace the pump but it cost over $300 and im not sure thats the problem . . . help any ideas whats going on??? thanks

Re: ran out of gas, wont start

if you didnt hurt the pump which you may have, i wonder if you at least got some gunk in the fuel pick up?

I'm afraid e-powers prognosis is right. I think your pump is cooked. By the way your fuel pump and fuel level sensor are in one assembly.

I agree too,you burned the fuel pump up.You do not let it go below a quarter tank,The gas cools the fuel pump

Re: ran out of gas, wont start

When you first start up, the pump normally may shut down on time ... not pressure. The idea is to get the engine barely started ... after the engine is detected as running, the pump is allowed to continue.

It may take several "tries" to prime the fuel line and the filter... even if the pump is OK. So don't give up on it too soon. You could jumper around all the normal controls for the priming period if you want to go to the trouble ... this would keep the pump trying.

Remove the filter for a test try if you dare ... just be very careful ... you're gonna get a gasoline spray if the pump works ... be ready to shut down instantly.

Re: ran out of gas, wont start

did a bench test of the pump in a can of paint thinner. I did two 2sec test runs the pump ran but no flow. On the third test the pump did a pop sound and i had good flow. put the pump back in the car and it fired up perfect. So there must be a check valve inside the pump that stuck closed. thanks for the postings.
