new vr4

my friend found a vr4 for 2600 dollars. this sounds real cheap. so i am going to go with him tomorrow to look at it. the guy told us that when he starts the car there is a ticking sound. also he said that when you push the gas pedal it doesnt accelerate. he didnt give us much detail so i was wondering if you guys could let me know what to check out on the car when we go to look at it.

also the guys says he doesnt recommend us to drive it home, but to tow it.

thanks

Re: new vr4

What year? How many miles? Definately do a good once over on the car because that is incredibley cheap. If it is a tick tick tick sound that is probably just lifter tick and is common in our cars. You can get 99 lifters for about $160 bucks to cure that though. As far as not accelerating I am not sure without hearing more......does the engine at least rev up? Otherwise is the clutch shot? Go take a look at it and make sure and look for anything out of place and look under the car for leaking fluids of any kind.

Re: new vr4

so your friend found this cheap VR4....and with the known problems, and most likely many other yet undiscovered problems, your friend wants to buy it?

what can i say? he wants to be like me! lol. i told him that it is very cheap, unless he is buying from an old couple, then it will take alot of money to fix, on top of the money he will need for regular maintence and to make the car healthy.

i believe it is a 1993. i dont know much else about it. thanks though

Re: new vr4

ok i talked to my friend and he said it has 111k miles. this is what the guy told him

this car is a fast car it ran good but now it has a knocking sound 2 it. It runs and drives it just needs engine work the body is in good condition the interior is in mint condition. Everything works on this car askin $2600 OBO will also include brand new clutch

also he said it ran good b4 the ticking/knocking. i dont know if it is a ticking or knocking sound. i dont think it is the lifter tick though. i think it is more like a knocking sound.

Re: new vr4

tell ur friend to look for another vr4 i'm sure he can find a better runing one. and who knonws how manny problems there are with that car. hell he might save money just buying a better running one then spending the money that it will take to fix the car and all the hidden problems, if there is any. which i'm sure there is alot if he is selling it for that cheap. but you never know.

"it just needs engine work"...HAHAH, LMAO! ya, MAJOR engine work, like replacing the bearings and who knows what else!

if the owner doesn't know if its ticking or knocking, i would stay away from it. or, go look at it, turn it on, let it idle, then you should be able to tell if its a tick from the heads or a knock from the bottom end.

either way, tell ur friend not to get his hopes up. if he's never owned one of these cars before (or any DOHC import), then its not advisable to buy his first one that needs a LOT of work. tell him to wait, there's always another good deal around the corner.
