Cost for repairs.....?

“… Determined cause to be broken crankshaft position sensor. Cause of broken sensor is excessive crankshaft end play (approximately .050 of an inch), which is enough for the pick up plate to come out of alignment and break the sensor. Engine lower end will have to be replaced.”

this is what i was told needed to be fixed.. any one know about how much this would cost? (this is not my car so i didnt have this info said to me i was looking to buy the car and was just wondering if it would be worth my time at all, its a 1998 gsx)

Re: Cost for repairs.....?

Well you my friend have what we call Crankwalk which is also called Thrust bearing failure. Pretty much the motor is done. If you would like to keep the car you can either get a whole new engine from the same year, but your best bet would be to do the swap to an early Eclipse engine from the 90-92 models. I am currently going through the same thing so I feel your pain.

There are 2 good reads here about crankwalk and doing the swap to the other block

Re: Cost for repairs.....?

looks like a nice car. Not worth 5K, I see the FMIC and the gauges so I wonder what else is done to the car.

Re: Cost for repairs.....?

Its up to you man. I would price out how much you think you would spend on replacing that motor. I myself found a 6 bolt block from a friend here in town for 150 bucks. It needed some work but in the end it isnt that much to replace it. If you decide to do it then I would try and talk him down a little bit. It would be nice to see a mod list from the guy. Also buying a car that doesnt run isnt usually the best idea. You never know if that is the only problem. I know they are rare but sometimes you just got to wait it out and find the one you really want. I waited it out for about 6 months looking for one and when I finally found one in good shape with low miles and no mods, it just happen to be the color I wanted...Good luck with your decision.

Ight here is the list of mods.

ENGINE: Mobile 1 1030 every 3,000 miles. Engine/trans parts have less than 15,000 miles on them, most have less than 5,000 miles.

BOTTOM: 2.3L stroker, Crank lightened/turned 10 under, All gaskets Topline with 3'copper head gasket, clevite rod and main bearings, Balance shaft eliminated, Crower rods, Prothane motor mounts.

HEAD: Boared to 20 over, JE pistons(20 over), Titanium retainers, dual valve springs, 1mm over ferrea valves/guides, revised lifters, Topline Rockers, Magnacore plug wires, Blue Kevlar Timing belt(4000mi), Evo spark plugs.

ENGINE MANAGEMENT: Haltech E6K ECU W/laptop plug-in, Dell Laptop.

INTAKE/EXHAUST: HKS intake, 3' Custom cat back exhaust, 3' High flow cat, 3' down pipe.

TURBOFUEL: Ported 16g Turbo w/o2 eliminator housing, All new turbo gaskets, Greddy Intercooler, Tial 41mm wastegate, Greddy Type R Blow Off Valve, 550cc Injectors, Wallbro 255lpf fuel pump.

ELECTRICAL: Greddy Turbo Timer, Autometer Air/Fuel gauge, Blue Colbalt boost, oil pressure, coolant temp, and exhaust temp gauges.(lights on gauges controlled by switch on lower dash board), new battery DRIVETRAIN, ACT 2100 Clutch & Plate, Fidanza Flywheel, Transmission rebuilt around 15,000 miles ago.

EXTERIOR: 17" Momo rims, 4 New Eagle 1 RSA tires, JDM black projector headlights, Front Clear corner lights.

OTHER: BRAND NEW high output alternator, New Tires have Less than 4000 mi on them, Blue Kevlar timing belt has less than 6000 miles, New Coil packs and Transistor pack w/ less than 4000 miles, New Starter less than 6000 miles, All new no-squeak engine belts, Inspected 4000 miles ago.

There are likely a few modifications not listed. The sunroof works perfectly. The turbo spools are very fast and are set at 15psi. The horsepower is not known because the tuning has been done from a laptop while driving around using Haltech software. It is assumed that the horsepower is between 300 and 400 based on knowledge of similar cars. The laptop comes with the car as well.

Re: Cost for repairs.....?

Offer him $3700 and see what he says. I personally wouldn't pay more than about $4k for it.

EDIT: Is that the parts list thats on the car, or what you want? That's one HELL of a mod list, seems almost too good to be true.
