Exclamation 97 Lumina throwing codes...

Hey guys, I went to autozone the other day and had my car code checked because the service engine light came on and durring hard accelleration it goes, but has slight hesitation and almost feel as if the engine cuts out momentarally hear and there untill I get up to speed.

The guys there said that they couldn't tell me what was wrong because the code it threw was a maufacturers code and they couldn't say what it was. I tried to remember the number it gave me and I looked it up in a shop mannual and it points to the EGR.

I was wondering if you guys had any problems like this and/or may be able to give me some insight as to whats going on with my car and what may have to be fixed. Thanks guys, this one has me kinda stumped.

We will need the code to give any meaningful advice.

Re: 97 Lumina throwing codes...

It gave me 2 codes, P1404 and P1406. The book says that P1404 is "EGR valve closed pintle position" and P1406 is "EGR valve pintle position circuit". I don't know much about EGR's and if this helps, any advice would be helpful. Thanks

Re: 97 Lumina throwing codes...

those two codes indicate a blocked or partially blocked EGR valve. Cleaning it of carbon deposits may help.

Re: 97 Lumina throwing codes...

How difficult is it to take apart and clean out?
