fluid type

i have a 1992 ford ranger stx x-cab 4x4 4.0 v6. was going to change the trans fluid but the guys at autozone couldn't tell me what type fluid i needed. one guy said type-f the other said mercon....thanks for any help

I would venture to say Mercon. I have a 1990 thunderbird and my owners manual says mercon. Thats about when Ford stopped putting Type F in everything, but the powersteering system.
