On the E36 the ECU is located just forward of the vehicle glove compartment. The only way to access the ECU compartment is by going through the engine compartment side. On the firewall behind the passenger side shock tower in the engine compartment is foam rubber shielding. You undo the three black plastic buttons (approx. 1" in dia.) by pulling off with your fingers or prying using a screwdriver. Flex the foam shielding down to reveal the underlying plastic panel (approx. 5"X12") and undo the 4 Phillips head screws securing it. Remove the panel and locate the ECU (it is the lower control unit if you have an automatic trans vehicle).
