WS6 v. Camaro SS

Well it had to happen sooner or later this year. I got beat. I'm driving home from work on the 605 going north. I see a Black Camaro SS, with the optional exhaust sytem (The one that goes in the middle). It looked to me like he had wider tires on it, and it definitely didn't sound stock (Dunno how much power that additional exhaust adds, or what it sounds like, for that matter).

Anyways, the guy is pacing me. At first I didn't wanna bite, cause there was traffic all over the place. We both went onto the 210 freeway, going west. I'm about to go into the left lane, he goes in front of me, quickly, and then slows down. I was like, WTF. He immediately downshifts, and guns it. I see alot of black smoke come out of the back of his car (The car was running extremely rich from what I could tell). Anyways, I downshift to 4th, gun it, and follow in pursuit. Through the top of 4th I start reeling him in. I granny shift into 5th (I fucking hate shifting to 5th and 6th gear). I thought i'd start catching up, but then this car just starts to pull away, which is odd, cause I was reeling him in originally quite quickly. Anyways, i'm thinking he might have nitrous, as he was losing ground, and then his car just started leaving me quite quickly (Well that and the part about him running rich). I could be wrong though, and maybe he has a cam that doesn't make power till into it's higher rpm range. Anyways, he put a good car length on me, and I decelerated for the corner, realizing I was defeated. I think he wanted to run me again, but I was soo tired I could barely even tense up for the race.

Nice car nonetheless. Definitely faster then my bird.

Re: WS6 v. Camaro SS

Nice loss. Sounds like a damn good race between two pretty similar cars. He must have had more than just an exhaust to beat you too. Sounds like he might have been spraying nitrous. I have heard that the birds are just a tad heavier than the Z28's but I have also heard the SS is heavier than the Z28 so as far as weight goes I would think you guys would be pretty evenly matched.

Re: WS6 v. Camaro SS

atleast it was a close race. from what i've been seeing at pinks! is that the cars that use nitrous has extra fumes coming out of the tailpipes ( could be from a wet nitrous kit that has fuel jets along with nitrous jets )

Good death.
I wouldn't put my money and claim that the guy was spraying... But then again, I guess you never really know.

Good run, nonetheless.

Yeah, i'm just assuming at this point. For the most part I was gaining on him in 4th, and then once I hit 5th, he just seemed to pull away from me. Who knows, maybe he was playing with me.

Re: WS6 v. Camaro SS

hmm nice death. I love the center exhaust on those camaros though, just looks good IMO. Ill agree it was prolly a really large cam that didnt make power to high in the power band, he didnt seem to pull fast enough on you for me to think any kind of boost.

Re: WS6 v. Camaro SS

when you come across camaro drivers, most of them have the intake manifold, exhaust, ram air intake or short ram. some like the sleeper mods. idk, he might of had just basic mods or something, nice death :P

Re: WS6 v. Camaro SS

Well I have 4.10 gearing (Not exactly a roll racers ideal gearing). Anything over 110mph requires me to shift to 5th gear.

Re: WS6 v. Camaro SS

Sounds like a good run.

I had a funny one last night. Not really worth mentioning as it was a riced out Neon (non-SRT) and I had the family in the car.

The gears did it. If you were pulling him to 110 then he kept going...most likely he had stock gears with similiar mods.
5th is worthless for racing to me.
My 4.11's go to 124MPH....after that the race has to be over. I won't go into 5th WOT.

Re: WS6 v. Camaro SS

hmm...may be running nitrous and he has a really rich a/f curve for that. That could explain the black smoke.

Also, from what I've seen, those ls1 motors have some crazy top-end..even stock. GM definitely did their homework when they designed that one.

I vote that the gears killed you as well
