Clunking noise when coming to a stop
Hey everyone this is my problem, when coming to a stop sometimes but not all the time there is a loud clunking noise it slows down with the vehicle but does not do it everytime. I changed and checked all the brakes around but havent found anything loose or broken. Also, and I don`t know if this is related or not, when turning right there is a clicking noise heard from the front right side (cv joint I am geussing?) Thanks for any suggestions...

Hi You didn't indicate the year. Agree the clicking in the turn is typically the CV joint. Easiest to change out the whole shaft with a rebuilt. As to your clunking, if you are in the '95-'98 range, it may likely be the strut rod bushings. They are located on either side of the front cross-member, with the strut rod running from there to the control arm. The bushings are welded into the cross-member, and become loose allowing the bushing to move slightly under load producing metal-on-metal "clunking". On my '96, if I idle slowly forward, and pump the brake on/off/on etc. and bounce the front end up and down, I can make it clunk, clunk, clunk........If that is the case with you, this is the root of the problem. Here is a good recent post on the issue: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...hlight=busboy4 Good luck |

Re: Clunking noise when coming to a stop
Sorry, it is a 1997 3.8L. I am definately thinking of doing the axle with a rebuilt, I just have to build up the courage to tackle it for a weekend. As far as the clunking goes it seems to have gone away, I don't know why. Could the rainy weather have been doing something? Anyway thanks for the advice.
