1998 Gas door

For some reason my gas door does not open with the button or the manuel override. I just bought the car the other day and you can see where the guy used his key to open the door. When I bought it you had to use the manuel override plus the key so I took the latch off so you can just use the key. I'd like it to work properly and have no idea where to start. It appears that the release mechanism works properly just the door doesn't pop open.

There's just a small spring missing. It doesn't open all the way with the spring, just enough to get your hands on it. Check your local dealer for the spring, have 'em order it if necessary. You might be able to make one if someone with send you a detailed photo or two.

Thanks for the info. I just like my car right. I'll look into that spring. You wouldn't know the part # by any chance?

I've looked at the drawings very closely looking for a spring, I don't see one. There appears to be a button looking thing protruding from the top of the fuel cavity opening, towards the door. Do you have something like that on yours?

I think what I'm describing is the spring. If not, it may be a door ajar switch, but I don't see any further details on it.

OHHHH CONTI GUYS, WHERE ARE YOU ?? Tell you what zolemite, if we don't get some other Conti guys in on this thread soon, you might want to jump over > here < and ask about that spring.

Re: 1998 Gas door

Hey there,

I had the same issue with my '96 Continental and was able to purchase the part through my local Ford dealer (about $10) and installed it myself. Good luck!

Re: 1998 Gas door

I don't remember the part number. It is just a small piece of metal, folded in hald that acts as a spring to open the door. When it was broken, we had to pull the manual override (in the trunk) and open the door at the same time. If you call a Ford dealer, their parts department should be able to find the part number for you. I was not able to find it online, so had to order it from a dealer.

Good luck!
