Heat shield rattling sound
I have had some rattling noises and found problems with the exhaust manifold heat shields.
Question: are exhaust manifold heat shields needed? Will the lack of shielding affect any adjacent engine components? Both mine have rusted off their bolts. The passenger side I was able to repair by adding bigger washers. The drivers side looked tight to work in so I removed it. The shield had fallen off and was wedge in the lower pipe area. I started up the 2000 Rodeo and the rattle was still there. So I went under again and banged on the pipe and found the problem was the heat shield at the exhaust pipe Y joint. I just bent it upward until it stopped touching the pipe. Problem solved. I think. John |

Re: Heat shield rattling sound
I had the same problem with my manifold heat shields. I took them off and welded a washer onto it so the bolt could still hold it in place. Its been fine ever since.
I also had the same problem with heat shields on the rest of the exhaust and I put some big plastic zip ties on it and they've been holding up too. I think alot of people use the steel hose clamps to stop them from rattling though.
