99 Caravan Transmission Problem

My 97, not 99, Grand Caravan, 3.8 4-speed, will jump out of 1st from time to time. The engine will race, then when I let off of the accelerator the tranny will engage very hard. Have had some hard shifting from 2nd to 3rd from time to time. If I run it in 3 instead of D the shifting is better. The slipping occurs in both positions. The slipping started last week. I plan to take it to a shop next week, but would like some input. This is my 2nd transmission. It has right at 75,000 miles on it. Have not changed fluid since overhaul.

Thanks,

rksand

Re: 99 Caravan Transmission Problem

Have you tried the basics? Checked fluid level and condition? I'd change the fluid and filter first and be sure to used ATF+4 fluid. If you take it to a shop, you can bet they'll say it's shot. Just may be, a little TLC will help. I'd never let a tranny go that long with out a fluid and filter change.

Good Luck! Hope it works for you. You might get someone to pull the tranny codes for you also. That would help you get an idea what the problem might be, if there are any trouble codes.
