94 Grand AM quits when I try to stop

Gentlemen:

When I drive at highway speeds for a while, and I apply the brake to stop, it will kill the engine, unless I put it into neutral. I can also shift down to 2nd, then 1st to keep the engine running.

When the engine quits it starts again easily, but dies when I put it in gear. I have to give it a little gas to get moving again, but it takes a few trys to do it.

Other than that the car runs fine. The engine has been rebuilt and is in fine shape. The car is not a junker.

I want to know if this is a transmission problem or ???.

Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this.

Smitty

Welcome to AF !

This would most likly be the Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid or TCC that is not disengaging, typical early model GM problem.

Here is a link that has DIY directions for the TCC replacement.
How To Replace Your Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid (GM)

Hope that helps.
