Best Simple way to remove your car paint? (for a paint job)

Whats the best way to remove car paint for primer preparation?

-water sanding sucks and not very reliable for the primer job..

-power/electrical sanding takes long but leaves the metal with a "granite-like" surface so paint cant stick on better

-i was thinking paint remover + hand sanding?? (never tried it)

-anyone know anything about acidtone (the paint will melt right off the car when it touches) [never tried it]

It's acetone, or brake fluid.

you dont need to remove your paint to paint your car just D.A. it with like 80 grit then prime over that. but make sure you use wax and grease remover before you prime so that there isint any dust. The only time you need to go to bare metal is if your paint is peeling or cracked. and if you are using filler instead of glaze coat.

You will need to sand with another grit then 80 before primering.

minimum grit for primer should be 180... otherwise you will get swirl marks and sand scratch swelling... and dont skimp on the prep work cuz if you do it could make your final product look like shit.. i say just bring it to a professional to paint it if you really dont know what your doing and want a professional job.. if your just looking to learn keep asking here and ill try my best to get you answers in a timely manner... or im sure people here that have painted cars will help as well.. but dont look for a A-1 job.. btw acetone isnt brake fluid. acetone is a chemical used in some paint thinners. it wont remove paint that well, especially if your not sanding first. random orbit power sander down to the primer, scuff the primer, but dont go down to bare metal unless theres rust and your using filler primer like stated above.

I didn't mean it's called acetone or brake fluid. I meant it's called acetone (he spelt it wrong), or he can use brake fluid. I know it's 2 completly different things.

i just sand to 80 then use a primer surfacer and wet sand that down with 400. then seal and lay base then clear.everything that I have painted has turned out looking real good no sand scratches or anything like that.

just a tip... primer surfacer doesnt provide moisture protection. so before you seal make sure that ALL the moisture is completly out or you may have rust/peeling problems down the road.

Re: Best Simple way to remove your car paint? (for a paint job)

go to auto repair supplying store. Ask for air craft stripper. Spray on watch paint fall to earth exposing bare metal. Do not use brake fluid....do not get anything on surface with an oil base because it will cause fish eyes.

DO NOT TAKE IT TO BARE METAL IF YOUR JUST REPAINTING THE CAR. That would be the dumbest thing to do ever. Remove EVERYTHING off of car except for the major body panels. If no dent repair or any other body work is needed, then just scuff the living piss out of it with scuff pads. Prime. Wet sand. Paint. Clear coat. Wet sand. Buff. Stand back and fix your hair in reflection. Of course its not that easy plenty of other little things to do. One hint of advice would be....keep sanding. When you think your done....your not. Use a block too....you want straight panels.

umm or dont... using a razor blade is a royal pain in the ass. they always break and its very time consuming and you always end up sanding it because it never comes out perfectly smooth anyway.
