Tire kicking a 99 Grand Cherokee Limited

Hello,
Looking at a 99 Grand Cherokee Limited. 8 cyl. 4.7 liter with 179000 miles. Engine runs strong, gears shift smoothly, and steering feels tight. Exterior is sharp and clean and interior is in pretty good condition.

Should I be afraid of the high mileage?

Thanks,
Joe

Re: Tire kicking a 99 Grand Cherokee Limited

Be very afraid....Anything with that high mileage for that year I would stay away from/ I have a 2000 and it only has 65,000 on it.......

It was probably a good Jeep for someone for alot of years but you will inherit all the problems the old oqner didnt want to deal with....

How much for it anyway?

A good friend of mine had a '95 limited with over 300k. Motor/tranny still 100%. All I know he had to replace was viscous coupling and radiator. He tired of the 18 mpg, but it was still in such good condititon his son purchased from him last year and it's still going. I have driven it myself when it had 270k , and it was just fine.

I guess what I wanted to know was, how well do jeeps hold up. I would certainly never even entertain the thought of buying say a Ford Explorer with that kind of mileage...The Kelley Blue Book lists the Jeep at about 6k for a 99 with 179000 miles on it. Whereas an explorer couldn't come close.

Just curious..

Thanks

How long is a piece of string? All vehicles age differently.

The first thing I would do is check for MIL codes the via the odometer.
Compression check the motor, look at the plugs.
Check all the fluids.
And definitely check the automatic dual zone A/C & heater function, unless its been fixed, odds are it's broken. ($1500 repair)
Do a Car Fax report.
Private party? Ask for maintenance records/receipts.

Check everything you can think of/practical.

Re: Tire kicking a 99 Grand Cherokee Limited

It's listing right now on ebay for a couple more days. Still at about 2,500. The kelley blue book lists it at 6k even with 179000 miles. I have seen it and driven it. Runs good , shifts good, with no leaks. Interior is typical for miles and exterior looks great.

Which is why I wanted to get some feedback from jeep owners. I'm thinking that if it stays right around 3k it might be a very good buy.

Tks,
Joe

Damn straight.

You are lucky in that you have seen and driven the vehicle, so you have an advantage. What Bob D says is practical advice. I would add if you can snap the thing for $3K then go for it.

As jeepgclwj said above, be afraid . . . be very afraid . . . actualy, didn't Yoda say this? You are indeed a very brave individual after reading the whole Jeep Forum about Stalling $$$$, Bad PCM (the computer) $500+, and the HVAC Blend door issue $1000 - $1500, the audio system $$$$, oh then there's the transmission, and oh yea, here's a funny one, my speed odometer is off by a huge amount, cost my wife and daughter each a couple hundred dollar speeding ticket . . . and the stealership can't adjust it . . . solution . . . $200 or so after market product. My PCM / Stalling issue started several hundred miles under the warranty limit, but then, by the time it became obvious it was the PCM, I was over waranty, and no help from the dealer . . . is no customer loyality why Daimler wants to sell off Jeep? I won't buy another!
