computer codes on 89 jeep cherokee

Im wondering if there are computer codes on an 89 jeep cherokee. If so, how do I find them. There is something drastically wrong with my EGR system and i am trying to resolve it. Currently i am being told the computer is not sending signal to the silinoid that controls the vacuum to the EGR to open the ports at 15mph so my NOx levels are about 3000 at 15mph and about 1500 at 25mph. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, but where would the codes be flashing at? im assuming the computer, but where is the computer located to see the light?

Check engine light will flash. Get repair manual from library

On an 89 , you cannot do the ignition thing and count the lights to get the codes.

You have to have a special reader called a DRBII. About the only place you can find one is on e-bay, but they are expensive. Other than that, you can try to find a shop that has the correct reader.

Like I said, you cannot get the codes on an 89 cherokee by using the ignition key sequence. I have two 89 cherokees. You must use a Diagnostics Relay Box (DRB) good luck finding one.

Trouble codes are ok and all, but they're no match for a
volt-meter

Renix based engines do not store codes. You have to check each sensor individually. the link above describes how. You can do it with a decent but reasonalbly cheap DVOM.

The DRB-II has connectors that plug into the break out boxes under the yellow caps in the engine bay aft of the battery. (Well they're yellow on my '88).

You are correct,that system does not store codes,but the drb 2 does some tests that usually can find some,but not all problems.A dvom is essential

AUTOZONE only does OBD....ones pictured above are(supposedly) only at dealers
