Kurt Vonnegut Dead

You may have enjoyed some of his books. I haven't really read any, except for Breakfast of Champions.

Re: Kurt Vonnegut Dead

I read an interesting short story by him, where one captain's family and platoon is held captive, and their freedom can be won with a chess match, only all the pieces on the chessboard are his family and soldiers, and if they are taken on the chess board, they are killed.

RIP

Re: Kurt Vonnegut Dead

vinny- yeah I read that in one of his collections, Welcome To The Monkey House. The short story of the same title is really something worth checking out.

That's really a shame though, there goes one of the best contemporary American writers.

Re: Kurt Vonnegut Dead

I never read any of his books, but I saw Empire of the Sun, a Spielberg movie he wrote. It was semi - autobiographical, IMO a powerful and disturbing film.

Actually, Empire of the Sun was based on the novel by JG Ballard and the screenplay was written by Tom Stoppard.

Vonnegut's novel Slaughterhouse Five was made into a movie back in the golden years, directed by George Roy Hill (Butch Cassidy, The Sting). You should certainly see it if you can find it.

Doh!!!
Your right................ I got Ballard's and Vonnegut's war stories confused.
