Need to borrow some expertise advice

OK here is the situation: i have a 91 Prelude and im running an alpine amp for the highs and mids and a Sony mobile ES XM7547 for my subs. the amp is huge and seems to be power thirsty like a bitch. im using this particular amp because of its high current mode which is stable down to 1 ohm bridged(im running two polk dx 10s in parallel). My alternator failed once and I had it rebuilt. the system worked fine for a long while(5-6months maybe), but now my alternator failed again. Im running 4 gauge power and ground with a 1 farad monster capacitor. do you think i should just get the alternator replaced? or should i put an auxillary battery in the trunk? if i put a second battery in how do i keep it operating do i just recharge it every week or two? Id appreciate any advice that anyone can suggest. by the way, upgrading the alternator is pretty much out of the question because when i looked into it - the cost was way too much. Im not entering competitions or anything.

get another battery for the trunk, it'll help a lot more in the long run. I'm not too sure about how most of them work these days. My friend had one a few years ago and it just sat by itself in the trunk and he never had to recharge it.

i would recommend optima battery (deep cycle). they can take a beating and can be recharges and discharges quickly. they should run about $150. you will have to wire the battery straight to the primary battery. if you're thinking about running a regular battery in the trunk without wiring it to the battery or alternator, you can say good bye to that battery because regular batteries dont' like it when their voltage level drops very low. or you can just get the alternator rewind to like 110 or 120amp.

The Sony amps are known to be power hogs. You could also look around for a new amp for your subs, look for something class D by JBL, Rockford, JL, P Gold. I have a JBL and it gives me more Watts, stays cooler, and is better on power than the Junk Jensen 600 Watt amp that I had. It will also save you the weight of the battery in your trunk. But if it came down to it, I would go with a better Alt. than a battery in trunk. IMO

Does anyone know where i might find an alternator that would be a direct fit for my car? and how much do you think it would cost? thanks for everyones help.

They usually have rebuilt High output alternators on Ebay all the time. I don't know if they'd have any to fit your car, but you can probably keep an eye out for one or search under a different car and e-mail the guy who makes them.

a second battery will only be another load on the alternator once the car is started. The alternator is the ONLY thing supplying power when the car is running (unless the voltage drops to like below 12V). The only real answer is to get a bigger alternator. There have been lots of posts about that on here, try doing a search.
