84 mustang 5.0+drag lite 15X14

I wondering how to go about tucking drag lites on a 84 mustang. i heard you have to take out the upper shocks in the rear. do you need lower control arms? the mustang already has c. adjustables.

Re: 84 mustang 5.0+drag lite 15X14

15x14 is a wide wheel. To "tuck" that much wheel/tire you are looking at alot of work. Yes you will have to remove the top shock.
What do you mean by c. adjustables?
To need a 15x14 wheel I guess you are gonna run huge tires? You will have to tub the car and narrow the rear. To help you choose the best parts for your application I need to know more about your combo. How much power are you making? Or do you just want that drag car look? I would suggest Strange axels, 9" ends (if useing 8.8 rear), differential or spool with the same spline count as the axels, and of course a fresh set of gears with a ratio of your choice. The spline count you choose will depend on the power/torque you are making. If this is a street car then I would suggest you stay away from a spool, get a Strange pro-posi unit (its limited slip but will spin both tires evenly when you punch it). Also the rear gear you choose will depend on the tire you wish to run as well as the rpms you plan on turning. Last but not least you have a choice to make with the 9" ends as well. When you weld 9" ends to an 8.8 rear you are replacing the stock C-clip style ends. But you have big 9" ends and small 9" ends to choose from. If you plan on running a "race" style rear disk (again Strange makes awsome rear disk brakes that are light weight too) then you can use the big ends. If you want to run stock style rear drum brakes or upgrade to the rear disk brakes offered by SVO then you need to use the small 9" end.
You may very well have to run an offset lower control arm. I would also suggest that you run an adjustable upper control arm. Team Z and Wolfe Race Craft offer great parts. I have Team Z suspension on my car with a Wolfe 10-point cage. Give Dave at Team Z a call 734-789-9540. He can go over everything with you and get you the parts you need at a competitive price.
There are alot of variables as you can see. There is no bolt up and go to "tuck" wheels this big with the correct size tire for the application.

You don't have to tub, you can always go out, like I am doing.

14" wide on a fox, that would leave like 6" sticking out of the wheel well. LOL open wheel mustang.

Do you mean Koni?

David,

8" is all that can fit in your wheel well? Are you sure about that? I had 10" wide on my Fox without any clearance issues. Plus wide bodies are the way of the new world order

I could fit 10" wheels fine but they would have a 1/2" or so hanging out I think. Gonna save the bullet proof 8.8, mini-tub, 325/50-15 project for this winter. Its time to drive this thing!

Re: 84 mustang 5.0+drag lite 15X14

With a 10" wide wheel and a 6.5" backspace you could run a 275/50-15 and do some hammering to the inner wheel wells and be fine. Or you could run say a 275/60-15 and hammer the inner wheel wells as well as roll the fender lip and be fine.

What are you trying to acheive here? Do you just want that big tire look for your car? I'll get a pick of my car from the back if you like.

looking for big tire look without having to go too far in changing things in the back pictures would be fine.

Re: 84 mustang 5.0+drag lite 15X14

The widest you can go without rubbing and without major work to prevent rubbing in the back is a 275/50-15. Mickey Thompson ET street radials tend to be a little wider than BFG drag radials. For the 275/50-15 you can go with an 8" - 10" wide rim. I have 8" wide Weld drag lites on my car and from the side they give a little deeper look. The 10" rim would give a more squared off look on the side of the tire. With the 275/50 you will have to remove the top shock and hammer in the inner fender area some. You wont be able to tell it was hammered unless you look inside the wheel well. I'll try to get a pic up from the back of my car for refference.

Re: 84 mustang 5.0+drag lite 15X14

This isnt a pic from the back but it shows the front tire pretty good. See how the from tire is kind of squared off with the rim? Sort of flush down the side? Thats close to what the 275/50 would look like on a 10" rim. You can see the back tire decent in this pic. It doesnt really show how wide it is but you can see how it looks "deeper" than the front. The 275/50-15 tire is 26" tall, and about a foot wide. These are directional tires.

Hope this helps some. I'll try to get a better pic up soon.

the front is sitting so high in this pic because the motor wasnt in when I took the pic.
