engine removal 93 3.8ltr/auto

hey now
im working on my friends 93 olds.
he blew a rod, and i offered my services to help him out.

i have everything removed from engine. i labeled all the wiring etc...besides the point.

i disconnected the tranny, and torque convertor from motor.

the motor is binded to the tranny. wont come off it. i got the front of the tranny off the motor(held up on a slider)
i know the rear has same, but its not budging.

the motor is 100% ready to come out other thean this.
does anyone have any ideas? is there something im not seeing while under the van?
im doing this as a favor to him as i said, and im doing it for free.
if anyone has any other advice that can help me move this faster along, thatd be great. i cant find any info on anything to do with this thing on the net

Did you remove the pass side trans-to-engine bracket?

Welcome to AF.

There is a sneaky bell housing bolt under the exhaust crossover, is it out? Easier to drop the subframe with the trans and engine 1 piece.

yeah, theres actually two of them, if were thinking the same thing, one easy to see, easy to get to, the other one: not so much.
it is out though, im going back to the van today at 430.

ive got a tiny gap between the bell housing and the motor in the back end, fully disconnected from the from end.

we had 2 options to do the motor on this thing:
junk it, or remove from top end. zero room where it is, and lack of proper tooling to get it high enough to drop crossmember with everything attached. if we were able to do that, id be one happy dude.

Welcome to AF.
i believe we did
we removed the following brackets/mounts
the one under motor, passenger side, looks like a brick.
the one at top of motor that braces it to the front core support.
and the one connecting the motor and tranny together with a rubber mount/bracket in the drvr front.

we think theres one more up underneath the tranny on the opposite side of the last one i mentioned, similar to the brick one on the passenger side.
we cant get to it, but we want to leave it in place to keep tranny on the chassis.

You might be stuck if you can reach that other mount.
As Max said, it is so much easier to drop it all,
but I understand not being in a position to lift the chassis off .

And we totally understand about "no room"

your not kidding!

were still stuck.
i see 100% nothing that is keeping us from sliding the motor off the tranny.

unless theres a bracket or something connecting the 2 in the back somewhere?
theres got to be something.

Re: engine removal 93 3.8ltr/auto

It is possible the weight of the trans is cocking the the trans down or up on the engine causing the convertor to stick in the crank pilot, tough to tell without going through this on site with you.

Re: engine removal 93 3.8ltr/auto

I agree with Max.
My reply was on the same thing, the torq converter and no room.
the torq converter is keeping the engine from moving right to pull the converter free .

Good Luck

Re: engine removal 93 3.8ltr/auto

figured out what it is.

theres a stupid bracket connecting the tranny to motor on the rear side.

im leaving now to disconnect it.
there was also a stupid bolt we hadnt seen, took removing the top half of the engine to get to it.
after that, the tranny almost fel 100% out of place, aside from the bracket.

i am never doing another olds again!
im sticking to my vws! way more room to work with
