Replacement Door Speaker issue - hmmmm....

Hi All -
I was getting a buzz from the passenger door speaker in my 2001 (non bose). Using the info on this forum, I ordered a pair of 6.5" woofers as replacements - retaining the stock tweeter. It all went together really easy. However, the new speakers are significantly quieter than the stock units. Were the stock speakers a full range speaker?

The speakers I purchased are Rockford Fos, they are listed at 100watts (250 max) and have a vented 40oz magnet and a poly cone. I am using the stock head unit.

It doesn't sound terrible - just like the mids are missing.

What would you guys reccommend that would work ok with the stock head unit.

Yes, they are (were) full range. I do not know the stock output of the factory head unit, but I am thinking you might be really underpowered. I changed my door ones out a couple of months ago because of the same problem and the new ones sound much better than stock. Now, here's the Kicker! (pun intended!) Shhhh, don't tell anyone, but I installed a $20 pair of "Durabrand" speakers from Wal-Mart and they REALLY work well. Ok, so I am not made out of money, and when pigs fly (or my wife lets me), I'll buy a REAL set of speakers.

You probably need to get an amp. Nothing too crazy, just enough to power those speakers.

Ya, you can get a little 4 channel amp fairly cheap. Then just wire the stereo to that, then run wire to the speakers, it will sound alot better. I'm not sure what the power output is on the factory deck, but I'm sure it's not enough for the speakers you bought.


This is actually what I intend on doing with my truck. I just haven't decided if I'm going to keep the factory deck, or spend money on that too. Would be alot less work if I had preamps to work with.
