92 Town Car Doors

I just got this 92 executive series town car. The biggest complaint i have is you have to slam the doors to get them to shut all the way. Is this the way they are supposed to be or do they need adjusting. Also my airbag light flashes for a while and then goes off for a while and then flashes again what do you think might be wrong.

Re: 92 Town Car Doors

If the Door Latch Assembly is not directly inline with the Striker Bolt you will have a door closing problem. Most common cause for Striker / Latch mis-alignment is Hinge wear. Check all your Door Hinges, they may need to have the Pins / Bushings replaced.

Airbags will need to be checked and/or replaced. Get the FSM at fordcds or eBay for detailed pinpoint diagnosis on the airbag circuits. I believe there was a clockspring that can be the culprit too.

my town car was the same way. the pins and bushings were bent and needed replacing. easy job, but keep in mind the doors are VERY heavy. make sure you have at least two people help you lower it down on something so you can replace the components. that comes from years of the previous owner slamming the door to shut it and this is a result of that

Re: 92 Town Car Doors

I had one of the doors hinges replaced by a body shop it was bad you had to hold the door up to close it that is better but you still have to slam them to close them. Is there a striker plate adjustment. Thanks to everyone that responded I appreciate your help.

Re: 92 Town Car Doors

Door Latch Striker

Tools Required:

Torx® Drive Bit Set D79P-2100-T

The latch striker should be shimmed to get the clearance between the striker and the latch. To check this clearance, clean the latch jaws and the striker area. Apply a thin layer of dark grease such as Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C (ESA-M1C75-B) or equivalent to the striker. As the door is opened and closed, a measurable pattern will result on the latch striker. Use a maximum of one shim under the striker. Use Torx® Drive Bit Set D79P-2100-T or equivalent to loosen and tighten the latch striker to 35-45 N-m (25-32 lb-ft).
