Flywheel Noise?

2000 Montana- 136,000
After start-up and driving 3-4 minutes I've been getting a ticking noise from under the car. While driving I can't hear it. When I stop, and while still in gear, and the window is down it is very prominent. Hard to describe the sound. It's steady, almost like a lifter knocking, but like I said more of a ticking like metal on metal. Now, after the car has been stopped and in park about 10 seconds it stops. I can re-activate it buy shifting in and out of gear. After I've stopped I get a intemittent noise with no certain pattern, maybe 10 to 15 ticks a minute. I've been all around the engine and believe I have isolated it to the flyweel. I removed the inspection cover, flywheel bolts and teeth appear o.k. I've used the screw driver/pry bar stethoscope listening method and can't locate anything. The sound I hear is definately isolated on the flywheel.
Suggested problem or any further way to check would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Flywheel Noise?

Maybe the starter is not retracting all the way and just shifting is enough of a vibration to allow the teeth to rub? Not likely, but just an idea. Looking at the side of the flywheel or starter teeth would indicate if there was any rubbing going on.

Re: Flywheel Noise?

Thanks 100% for the reply. Actually I was thinking about replacing the starter with a junkyard cheapie just to see if that was the problem. Like I said, I really don't see a problem with the flywheel, but it's worth a try. Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Flywheel Noise?

Further diagnosis. It's been raining heavy for the past 24 hours and I've noticed that the the noise is gone. Leads me to believe that something is definately rubbing on the flywheel.
