91 Lumina won't start

I own a 1991 Chevy Lumina 3.1 and lately when I would go up hills it would hesitate some but other than the hills it would drive fine. It would also idle high when stopped at lights. Yesterday I went to start the car and it would not start it would crank but not start. I put the code detector on the car and it said it was the EGR Valve so I replaced it, not the problem the car still will not start. All help would be appreciated.

Re: 91 Lumina won't start

I think you have two problems running concurrently...the eGR probably fixed 1 and 2, but the no start has nothing to do with that...

Try shooting starting fluid in the intake and see if it fires on that...if so, you have a fuel delivery problem...if not, may be an ignition module, crank sensor, etc...

Re: 91 Lumina won't start

I used the starting fluid in the air intake and the vehicle started. Once I stopped spraying the starting fluid the vehicle stopped running. Not sure what to do next, any help would be appreciated.

Re: 91 Lumina won't start

I have checked the fuel pump and it is working. I also checked to see if there was spark and there was. I need to know where the CPS is located at. Thanks

Re: 91 Lumina won't start

CPS is fine if it started...your fuel pump or FP relay is bad...check fuel pressure at the rail, if below spec, the injectors won't open....

Re: 91 Lumina won't start

I guess you've tried giving it some gas while cranking?

If an EGR is stuck open, it'll take half throttle or so to get it to start...sorry, I forgot that possibility...but since you changed it, I can't see why that would happen...

Re: 91 Lumina won't start

Thanks for your help. Changing the EGR fixed one of the problems but for the car not starting I check the 10 amp injector fuse and it was blown and replacing it fixed the problem as the car started right up. Again thanks for all your help.

cps is right behind your harmontic balancer..but if you don't know what your doing you might take it to a shop.you need a special tool to set sensor. to set it right..this can cause you a big bunch of trouble if you don't do it right. you might want to get a hanes manual from autozone or avanced.....
good luck...

Re: 91 Lumina won't start

After figuring out that a 10 amp inj fuse had blown we changed it and the car ran for a short time and than the fuse blew again. Any ideas of what could be causing this? All help is appreciated. Thanks

Make sure the CPS harness isn't rubbing the harmonic balancer and shorting out...I think the CPS has it's own fuse but maybe not on your year...

Re: 91 Lumina won't start

I agree with Jeff, check the harness that runs from the CKPS, across the back of the engine, under the harmonic balancer, and over to the ICM. If it has gotten into any mnoving parts (pass cv axle, harmonic balancer, serp belt) or touched an exhaust manifold and melted, it could be shorted causing that fuse to blow. Also check the big main harness connector for the fule injector rail (near the alternator) for signs of corrosion, wear.

Scrapper, the CKPS needs no setting and on this year car is not behind the balancer, but in the back of the block just above the oil pan rail slightly toward the passenger side. The sensor is designed to only go in one way. There is no air gap to be set like the older 3800's or any type of adjustment. The 3.1 didn't use the 2 CKPS's (with the 2nd behind the balancer) until 94.

Re: 91 Lumina won't start

no problem scrapper, I know how easy it is to get confused from year to year changes. I just didn't want anyone getting mis-led looking for something that wasn't there on their particular vehicle.
