Question Weatherstrip proplems?

Since I bought my 98 Eclipse GS I've notice that theres is always dirt, dust or water in my door jams and lot of dirt on the hatch, on both sides. I'm talking about the area where you place the windshield fluid for the rear glass. Every time I clean it, it gets dirty after a few weeks. I assume whenever I wash my car all the dirty water "leaks" inside there. The hatch, doors and windows close OK, do not seem to be misaligned. Does the actual hatch suppose to have weather trip on it? Mine doesn't. Should I replace my weather strip on the doors and on the hatch? If so, where do I get it? Is it expensive/ hard to replace?

Re: Weatherstrip proplems?

There is no weather stripping around the hatch except around the glass. The spots your talking about are designed for drainage of water inbetween the hatch and the body panels, they are meant to attract and drain water and consequently dirt accumulates there. Just wipe them out with a towel every once in awhile if it bothers you. There should be no water getting to the door jams though, as the flexible plastic piece below the windows should be keeping it out when the door is fully shut.

There's supposed to be weatherstripping on the car all the way around where the hatch shuts down on it, if it's not there you should definitely get it. You could try the dealer, but it'll probably be expensive. Otherwise Ebay or somewhere online should have it.

That piece of weatherstripping should go all the way around the car where the hatch shuts down on the car. You will acquire some dust on the outside of the weatherstripping, but none should get on the inside.

Re: Weatherstrip proplems?

Ok I see what your talking about now. I thought he was talking further down where the fluid filler cap was, I don't have any weatherstripping down there I don't think.

Well that weatherstripping should go all the way around the hatch area like one big circle or oval. I'll see if I can find a better picture.

Re: Weatherstrip proplems?

So it is normal to have dirt in the area where you put wiper fluid? Cause if i don't clean it often it sticks to the surface and its hard to clean.

Mine does get dirt and stuff that accumulates in there, yes. Just get a wet rag and scrape it out occasionally.

Re: Weatherstrip proplems?

My stripping doesn't go all the way around. Actually, I don't think there's any around the hatch period. I thought that's what the "gutter" was for.

Re: Weatherstrip proplems?

Haha damn you guys are making me second guess myself now because I can't actually go out and look at my car, but I'm 99.99999% sure that that weatherstripping is suposed to be there like I outlined in the pic above (or at least my car has it). I know what "gutter" you guys are talking about, but that just drains the water from the top down and then drains it out those little drain holes, but that doesn't stop any dust or anything from getting inside, that's what the rubber weatherstripping is for. I don't know why you guys don't have it, because on every 2g that I've ever seen it's there.
