Fuel Problems??

I have a 1996 Rodeo 3.2 v6. after running out of gas a few weeks back i noticed that sometimes while driving i will get a sudden lag/rpms drop to zero, as if there is no gas being recieved. usually it just happens for a second but a few times it has been worse for about 10 seconds or so.it also has trouble starting on some occasions as well, especially after this occurs. What might this be? Fuel pump? Filter? My fuel sending unit has been out for sometime if this has any association with the problem, i dont know. thanks.

yes to all your questions. at least you have a good understanding of when it started. start with the filter. then the fuel pressure regulator. then if no go *test* for fuel volume and pressure.

Yup. I'd suspect you sucked up the dregs at the bottom of the tank and it has clogged your filter.

Awesome thanks a bunch guys. One more question though, i see the small filter in my fuel line by my intake manifold, but is there another one somewhere else that i'm not seeing. i'm sure there is but i guess the question is where is it located?

i'm not aware of any fuel filter in the engine compartment. you may be confusing it with something else?
the fuel filter is clamped to the frame rail passenger side by the rear tire. crawl under, look up you will see it.

The fuel filter is located on the frame rail by the rear passenger tire. Spray a little PB Blaster or equivalent on the clamp but before-hand for an easier time. Shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes start to finish; there is only one bolt to loosen and then the gas lines simply slide on a nipple at either end of the filter. You might want to depressurize the fuel system before starting the project though - I ended up gas running all down my arms...
