How many amps is too much?

When I had my starter bench tested because it wasn't working, the service fella' said it drew almost 100 amps to start it and then around 75 amps while it was running (so the starter did work on his bench).

So, is that too many amps?? Is drawing too many amps a sign of a bad starter?? How many amps should it be drawing to get itself going and start the truck? I can't find any kind of specifications for this in my Haynes manual.

I'm just confused because I thought the starter was dead, but it worked on the bench test...but after reading a different thread in this forum, I'm concerned that it's drawing too many amps.

Re: How many amps is too much?

Too many amps is what causes fuses to blow and circuit breakers to trip, in a car battery if you draw too much amperage too fast you can fry the cells inside the battery, fry your starter relay (if your vehicle has one) and/or over heat your electrical cables.

Drawing too many amps means that your starter's internal electrical windings are starting to develop an internal electrical short, or the internal mechanics are wearing out causing too much internal drag on everything, therefore using more electrical power than it should.

Not sure what your starter should be drawing in amps, call the place that tested it for you and ask them what it should be using. Service Dept. at your local dealership may know as well.
