Chevelle 67 SS 427 keeps cutting out

Hi there,

I'm not very good with muscle cars but I know some stuff, my father's chevelle 67 SS cuts out after driving for random periods of time, he first thought it was the laser, so we put custom made aluminum fins on it to see if it was just getting overheated, but that wasn't it. Then we replaced the Laser with one from our old Camaro 67 RSSS but that didnt work either, we tried replacing the starter too, nothing worked. My father now thinks its the Starter-mounted solenoid that is causing the problem, this happened to us in my mothers 70' chevelle and we replaced the solenoid and that fixed it.

so does anyone have any idea's what it could be?

What's a "laser"? I KNOW what a "LASER" is...

When you say "cut out", do you mean it just dies going down the road?

BTW, there was never a true "SS 427" Chevelle.... GM had an internal ban on engines larger than 400 CID in intermediate cars until 1970. A few got through Yenko and a couple other "special" outlets. Rare animal, indeed, if a Yenko!

Im not saying it was stock, im just saying what was in it to help improve the results of this conclusion, but ya it cuts out going down the road at random times

So what ignition system do you have? Carb? Give as much detail about the engine and bolt-ons, and maybe we can narrow it down.

Its a 4 barrel holley carb, and the ignition is an accel laser 2.

No clues from your reply. Is it an intermittent miss or does it just drop out and die? I would look at the ignition trigger or the coil first, based on what you've said.

yes, it just drops and dies and sometimes starts up instantly again, or takes a few minutes, sometimes it doesnt even get started again. and we have already tried changing the coil, so that didnt work either

Find a Chevy HEI distributor and try it. Sounds like ignition more than fuel. Accel ignition is not the most dependable...

Next time it dies and will not start right back up, pull one plug wire and put in a good spark plug and ground it and try to start it again checking to see if there is any spark. This should get you to where you know if it is an ignition or fuel problem. Sounds like it could be fuel pump but check for spark first.

I had similar symptoms with a Rochester Q-Jet on a 402(396) -- if while you're trying to crank it, you smell gas, the carb may be leaking into the engine, flooding it-- the Q-Jet was leaking through a worn throttle shaft, but internal carb leaks can come from other places as well.

Oh, and make sure the choke is fully opening, if you have one.

We found the problem, it was the cable from the battery to the starter mounted solenoid, it was cut and sitting on the solenoid, and if we went over a bump or something it would cut out, so ya, we found it and fixed it, thanks for your Ideas
