84 Mazda RX-7 GSL-SE

Latley i've had my eye on the RX-7 GSL-SE. From what i see it has a pretty low milage for an old car (101,000) it has been re-painted and the owner has replaced a lot of things. I asked a real gear-head yesterday and he said that buying that car would be the dumbest thing i could ever do. He complains that the Rotary engine is unreliable and the car itself is unreliable. Can someone tell me if this car is worth it?

Re: 84 Mazda RX-7 GSL-SE

Here check out these three sites;

Non-Turbo: http://www.aaroncake.net/RX-7/buy1.htm
Turbo: http://www.aaroncake.net/RX-7/buy2.htm
General: http://fc3spro.com/TECH/h2b.html

Seriously though, as drftk1d said, define "reliable". I cannot speak for the FC, but 'drftk1d' can. I can tell you this though, I have owned my FD for two years and she is still running strong. I could not be any happier. IMHO, the secret to owning an Rx7 is “main-te-nance”. It is just like owning any car out there, but you tend to spend a little bit more $$$$ with the 7. This car is not called the “money pit” for no reason. Good luck on what you decide to do.

The RX-7 isn't a Corolla that you can just do oil changes every 5k and be okay. Like most sports cars, you have to be strict with the maintenance, just the RX takes a little more with its engine.

Re: 84 Mazda RX-7 GSL-SE

James,

A GSL-SE is worth at a minimum $1000 with a running motor. Parts alone are worth that. With this being said, in excellent condition, I would pay no more than $3000 for it.

I used to own several first gen's and the GSL-SE by far is the nicest to drive and handling. There is a mysterious problem that I had with mine that the idle would rev up and down for no apparent reason. After selling them, I believe the problem was a dirty throttle body. Unbolt and dip in a throttlebody cleaner if this occurs. Most people change the Throttle Position Sensor and it does not cure the problem, but only causes a loss in money.
