Looking to buy a 91 VR-4

An opportunity arose a few days ago and I am able to get my hands on a 91 VR-4 with under 60k original miles. The only problems with the car are a worn clutch and rotors (but rotors are simple). So basically I was wondering how hard it would be to replace the clutch on this car. I've done lots of Eclipse and Talon work but never really played with many 3000GT's. Oh, and what kinda clutch do you guys recommend? Thanks.

Re: Looking to buy a 91 VR-4

trust me, on a car that's 16 years old and probably has sat for long periods of times (seeing the low mileage), it will have more problems than just the clutch and rotors.

but yes, rotors are simple. if you've done clutches before, that will help you. however the AWD transmission is quite heavy, weighing in at around 90 lbs. if you're a big strong guy, you could do the bench press method for removing/installing the transmission, but a trans jack is nice. also, when you reinstall it, its a very tight fit between the motor and the frame members. the best/easiest way is to put the differential up first, then rotate the rest of it up to the motor (pivoting it about the differential. you'll understand it better when you actually do it.

read our FAQ thread. also, check out the thread titled "thinking of buying a VR4 for a 1st car". i know its not your first car, but there's some good info in there too.

welcome to AF!

like he said man, since its probably get the original timing belt and water pump, youll need to do a tune-up. The recommended service interval is 60kmi or 5 years, so it will most likely need it. For more info on what exactly it entails, check out the FAQ. look for "60k tune".

Re: Looking to buy a 91 VR-4

I just looked at the car yesterday and it is FLAWLESS except for a small crack in the rear bumper (Gloss Black exterior with a red leather interior). They (an older couple) are asking $2000 for it. Which is a steal, and either way I cant pass this car up. At least not for the price. I believe the engine alone can be sold for at least $1000. So even if I get it and decide it'll be too much work for me, I can part it and probably turn a profit. But I honestly dont want to part the car. But thanks for the input guys, youre great.
