94 Cougar Xr7 Fuel Problem

I have a friend that has this car. It has been running fine since he got it, and last night, they drove somewhere, went in, came out, started it, and it hesitated once put into gear. They say that in the 30 miles it was to get to their house, it used about half a tank of gas. I started it this morning, and there were no fuel leaks, but you could smell some major gas coming out of the exhaust. What should be the first thing that I check for with this? Thanks.

Oh, and also, they said they have to floor it to get it to go even 35 mph.

Compression test each cylinder.

No answer needed for me anymore. They got rid of the car the next day. About 9 months ago, lol.
