280zx vs. The Perfect Rice Burner

So I finally got my car brought down to me and was out driving around getting readjusted to the car because I haven't driven it in a while. After about 2 hours I decide to fill up and pull into a BP and their happens to be a primered, body kitted, winged, rimmed and every other ed I can think of basically a perfect rice burner. He comes over to me and leans on the fender of my car and informs me that if I shouldn't drive such a piece of junk on his streets. Granted my car ain't perfect but it still looks alot better than what he was driving. So I told him to get off my car and go away he got upset and left. Later when I was driving around he flies by me on the highway in traffic and flips me off. I ignored it and kept driving it was about midnight when I got to a long flat stretch of highway 3 lanes in either direction. That same car comes up behind me again and starts flashing his lights and weaving and what not trying to put on a show. At this point I was really tired of this guy so when he passed me I went for it. I was in 5th gear which is a .87 overdrive and I caught him easily and I asumme he stomped on it because he lurched ahead about a half a car length, I give it a little more get even with him wave "bye-bye" and put it to the floor I was 4 lengths ahead of him in a about 3 seconds and I rolled off, the speedometer in my car only goes to 80 and I don't know how fast I was going I just know it took a long time to get back to 80. Moral of the story don't screw with the ugly blue Datsun from 1980. I guess he didn't realize that under the Perrywinkle exterior beat the heart of a 450-horse monster that will turn an 11.7 on slicks. If you are wondering my car has a stroked 2.8 inline six, T3/T4 turbo, intercooler off an Isuzu NQR truck, 11 to one compression, close ratio five speed, LSD R200. It only spools 5psi but with 11 to 1 I don't think it will take kindly to anymore boost.

Re: 280zx vs. The Perfect Rice Burner

What crank do you have in it to stroke it? L28-D crank? Is it a 3.1?

What sort of tuning are you running to make sure 11:1 comp. isn't going to grenade under the stress of a turbo? Normally, guys who make that sort of power don't go over 9:1 comp., infact how did you get the compression that high to begin with?

What spec T3/T4? There's about a million variations.

What cam are you running in your L28?

What head are you running?

Which Close ratio 5-speed are you running? Datsuns only had an option of .864 5th gear ratio in both the Factory competition transmissions both wide and close ratio versions, only difference was the 1st-4th gear ratios. Unless you we're talking about the competition only tranmissions, there's three different versions but they all have a 1:1 ratio for 5th gear.

What R200 are you running? 3.54? 3.7? 3.9? 4.1? And which LSD unit are you using? NISMO 2-way? or a Viscious unit out of a Z31 R200? If you're using the '81-83 280zx Turbo LSD it'd be a 3.54 R200.

And after you answer ALL that... what kind of 'rice burner' was it? What kind of car was it?

Re: 280zx vs. The Perfect Rice Burner

1. Yes, it is an LD28 crank and is a 3.1
2. Only tuning done is a adjustable fuel injection box from Jet and MSD Digital 6 box, slight domes make 11.0 to 1 on a whistle.
3. Far as I know it is a .57 trim turbo it was on the car when I bought it.
4. Isky grind .595 lift 306 adv. duration grind no. Z-273.
5. Head is the P90 it came with ported and stainless valves.
6. 5-speed is an unconfirmed factory close ratio I've never had it apart or had it looked at again it came with the car.
7. R200 is a VLSD out of a Z31 I wish I could afford a NISMO 2-way.
8. 1g GSX Eclipse not modded as near as I could tell except for a fat exhaust and BOV.

Re: 280zx vs. The Perfect Rice Burner

How do you know it's making that much power? a Turbo L-series is about at it's limit near the 450hp range. And it takes a huge turbo to do it.

The design of the motor has it's limits, it just can't flow enough air.

Have you dyno'd it? Also, what size injectors are you running on that thing?

Man, The Stig is laying it down......

After you answer the rest of The Stig's questions I will need you to explain to me why you would let someone lean on your ride and disrespect you without giving him a pimp slap?

Well, I'm a Datsun guy, and 450+hp L-series motors pretty rare. And usually cost a shit ton to build. Infact, most Z guys don't get past 350whp on a L-series.

Oh, what size throttle body are you running on that? Stock L28-E intake manifold? Are you still running the stock Exhaust/turbo manifold? What size exhaust are you running?

I'll give my final synopsis after I've got all my clues.

Re: 280zx vs. The Perfect Rice Burner

Man, I don't blame him... I mean, I myself love the old Z's for what they are.
If I had the money and time to get one of the older ones, and restore it, I would without a doubt.

To Stig:
Dude, you still have the Z? Because I don't think I ever had a chance to see it, or I just don't remember.
If you get a chance, can you post up some pictures of the car so I can take a look?

Re: 280zx vs. The Perfect Rice Burner

I ask all the questions, because I like to have all my facts straight before I throw up a BS flag.

11:1 compression with stroker, big cam, the good head with a header and exhuast is good for maybe 225hp-250hp at most. N/A Datsuns on pump gas rarely see 300hp, I mean you've got to pull every oldschool hotrod trick out of the book to do it.

This guy is claiming 11:1 compression with 5psi of boost. Which, is almost unheard of save for say a LS6 with a Vortech Supercharger and the max psi you can run is 6psi. He's claiming 450+hp... with just a turbo slapped onto a motor that's got to be only pushing 250hp at most? 200+hp from just 5psi of boost?

I mean... seriously now.

Ok, lets forget all that and lets just focus on the one thing that triggered my alarms. 11:1 c/r with boost. Who does that? Only reason you can get away with it on such motors as the LS6 is that you can fine tune the ECU to pull timing and increase fuel pressure. The L28E's ECU is soooo primitive, you'd have to run a stand-alone to set it up correctly. And I don't see that as a listed mod.

This whole story has red flags to me.

I'm not officially calling him out, I just want some explinations in some manner of detail seeing as the original post was rather lacking.

Re: 280zx vs. The Perfect Rice Burner

hmm yeah the 11:1 compression ratio with boost really threw me. I dont much anything about the cars platform or engine. But i know if your gonna build an engine and boost, you dont waste money and an engine on 11:1 compression ratio. Idealy for boost you want to be somewhere between 9-10:1 CR.

Lets see some pics or a dyno sheet.

Re: 280zx vs. The Perfect Rice Burner

The serious boost engines, run 8:1 or 8.5:1, which is practically stock C/R. It's safe, and you can run 20+psi on it like some guys do with monster turbo builds.

It takes at a minimum of 15psi on a decent L28 build to make 300whp.

EDIT: I built a version of his motor on Desktop dyno, and it made 342hp @ 7500rpm, 259ft-lbs of torque @ 6000rpm with 6psi off a Garrett T04B turbo with 5* advanced timing.

With a proper stage II turbo camshaft, .460 lift 270/260 duration, 8.5:1 C/R and 23psi of boost I got 449hp @ 7000rpm, 345ft-lbs of torque @ 6000rpm with 8* advanced timing.

Remember these numbers are crankshaft, not wheel horsepower.
