Headers?? Price??Save gas??

Getting ready to look at headers for my 97 Tahoe. Any suggestions? Will they help get better gas mileage? And finally what will it cost me??

They usually do not help on gas mileage. May go the other way sometimes.
To get performance you will need other stuff to go with headers.
Headers are for letting the HP out but you need other stuff to put the HP in there.
Any other mods besides headers?
How much do you want to spend or how much HP do you want?
And remember headers can be a pain in tight fitting engine compartment.

Re: Headers?? Price??Save gas??

not sure how much horsepower i was looking to add but wanted to spend in the 3 to 4 hundred dollar range for the headers. Was thinking of adding a cam and of coarse flowmaster exhaust . Cold air induction AEM should be here by tuesday with ups. So besides that can you give me any tips on adding some horse without breaking the bank? Thanks again

To save big bucks or get the most for your money.
I would suggest a chip or pcm reprogram for some more HP and sometimes better gas mileage.
Good Luck

Re: Headers?? Price??Save gas??

will a programmer or chip be able to detect the already after market add on's, or the add-on's after the programm/chip installation?
i have a k&n c.a.i. and f.master exhaust. im still shopping for headers (so many to choose from), i wish i would of found the borla or banks huge kit, before i bought my current stuff.
any suggestions on headers, mass air flow sensor, throttle body, intake manifold (keeping stock hood), MSD ignition? i really need to get quicker off the line!

Re: Headers?? Price??Save gas??

No the programers do not have a way to tell what you have on it.
You have to tell the programer what you have or want.
Check around some of you local speed shops.
There is 3 ways you can go on the PVM /VCM.
Have it reprogrammed for what you want an have on it.
Just by a chip for what you want it to do.
Or you can get a programmer and adjust it the way you want it.

Decide what you want and want the truck to do.
And if you want to stay street legal or run it on the race track.

Headers and exhaust may help a little but to get a lot of HP you will need more to get big HP.
You have got to have HP inside the engine to get HP out of it.

For just a quick take off a lower rear end gear helps more than anything.
Good luck.

Re: Headers?? Price??Save gas??

Rear ends gears need to be matched to what you want to do and matched to your truck engine and transmission.
Race track professionals often swap rear end gears to get or tune in what they are doing what they want.
Dirt track racers will even swap gears for a wet or dry track to get more traction and car control.
A friend of mine takes about 6-8 sets of gears with him to the track.
Lower rear end gives more take off. Higher rear ends gives less take off power but more top end speed.
Good luck
