Unhappy 92 4.3 "z" fuel pump and "what the $&@!"

If it weren't for bad luck, I wound have no luck at all........
I'm guesing that my fuel pump went out this morning, was running fine but when I went to go to lunch the motor would turn but I had no fire,I just put $10.00 in so I knew I had gas, with starting fluid I could get it to fire but once I let go of the spray it would die again. So, fuel pump right?, a bit of a hassel but I can deal with it, BUT now for the FUN, after I got the motor fired up using the starting fluid I got a fountain of antifreeze , it's coming from under the EGR diaphram (of very close to it) .There isn't anything else there that it could come from and there shouldn't be coolant there to begin with. What could it be?..., the only components in that area are the EGR diaphram and the distribitor.cracked intake? head gaskets?.........it looks as if the fluid is coming from the above the intake(gasket/seal) not where it connects to the block. Also the fluid is only flowing on the rear of the block not the front ,where if it was, I'd have thought thermostat housing.
Please help turn my bad luck around......(I'm looking at a new motor aren't I? )
Thanks in advance for any help.........

Re: 92 4.3 "z" fuel pump and "what the $&@!"

It could be a fuel pump. It could also be a lack of injector pulses or no power to the injectors (check fuses).

The coolant is a different issue, and may be why there are no injector pulses or power, since it may have wet the distributor connections.

All this doesn't necessarily mean you are shopping for an engine, but you'll need to dig more deeply into the problem to assess the damage.

Re: 92 4.3 "z" fuel pump and "what the $&@!"

I tracked down the coolant leak, it's coming from the "coolant tube" on the right side of the engine(viewed from the inside). There is no other description available from parts stores or mechanics, it's just a coolant hose between the block and heater core (that's what I was told) and it is common for the "nipple" which it attaches to the intake to leak and/or break away.Once again that's what I was told. What I wasn't told is that they(the threaded end) are a pain in the a$$ to get out , I have put a generous amount of WD-40 on it and will try again tomorrow.Oh and I'm waiting to get the fuel pump since it is not in stock. So, no hurries anyway...........

Re: 92 4.3 "z" fuel pump and "what the $&@!"

I have the correct name for the "nipple" it's a cooling system connector Dorman part 800-402 Quick Disconnect, I was finally able to get back to working on the van today and my luck sure hasn't changed. The connector was broken just above the intake with a few threads showing so I thought that maybe this wasn't gonna be so hard to get out. I used my screw extractors thinking that I could just back it on out but all it did was strip , I had to have taken half the meat from the broken connector. Now the broken piece is even with the intake so there is nothing to grip at and the inside diameter is larger than my biggest extractor. No use in going forward with the fuel pump if I can't get this done.Any suggestions?

Re: 92 4.3 "z" fuel pump and "what the $&@!"

the saga continues........ I have been unable to locate the correct size tap to renew the threads in my intake, I was hoping that a parts store(Autuzone) would have one in their loaner tool collection or to buy even but they don't. Has anyone ever used Loctites Threadlocker ? According to their website ;

Permatex Stripped Thread Repair
Makes reliable thread repairs without drills, taps, tools or inserts. Restores worn, stripped or damaged threads and eliminates future corrosion, galling, seizing and rust. Effective up to 128 ft. lbs. of torque and between - 65°F to 300°F. Repairs most metal - to - metal fasteners up to SAE grade 5 English and 8.8 metric (coarse and fine).
Suggested Applications:
Intake manifold bracket fastener threads, timing chain cover bolt threads, valve cover bolt threads, water pump bolt threads."

After having no luck in finding the right tap I was thinking about JB welding the thing in but was concerned about the pressure it will have to endure.A friend mentioned the Loctite............ any suggestions/insight???

Red face Re: 92 4.3 "z" fuel pump and "what the $&@!"

and the saga continues............I ended up JB welding the nipple in place , that seems to have been my best decision so far, I replaced my fuel filter and while I was letting the penetrating oil sit on the straps/bolts for the tank I tried to turn the van over and lo and behold it started. Woo hoo , so I thought that I would try to get away without dropping the tank and replacing the fuel pump. (against advice per old_master, once again Thank You for your input I just wish I listened) The van ran good for a couple of days but it gave up on me , so I guess I get to have some more fun under the van.
