Paint
Im getting ready to paint my car. The weather is breaking and now is the time to fix my car. I already have my paint picked out. I need to do a few body repairs which im going to do myself. Im probably going to primer the car myself because i have a few rust spots on diff parts of my car from the salt over the winter.
Im looking to have my car painted right. I know a guy that paints car and im going to have him paint my car. He told me he'd paint my car for $200 or less but i need to buy the paint. (i was going to no matter where i went due to how specific i am with the paint) What i want to know if what are the best things ill need. Since im going to primer my car with primer out of a spray can would it really affect the color that much to buy primer and have him do that as well? I also need to know how much paint to buy. I have a 90 CRX. I was told before that i wouldnt need more than 16 oz. Im looking to have 2 or 3 coats unless someone knows a better amout of coats to do and i wana make sure i have enough paint. Also are there any clear coats that are better than others. i originally had everything picked out from house of kolors but im getting the base paint from a different company. I've never painted a car before but i have a basic understanding about the processes. i just want to make sure everything i have is good if not just average matterials. if you read through all of this and have input thanks. |

Stick with the same brand through out, from sealer to clear. Dont use HoK base, with PPG clear, all over a Dupont primer. $200 for a paint job, I'd be worried about. I charge $200 average for small airbrush work. A good job for a repaint costs about $4-5000. Good luck with your endeavor. I'm moving this to the Automotive Paint forum.

Re: Paint
Mike brought up two very important points - -
1. Forget the rattle can primer! 2. Don't mix brands! Stick with one brand of all components throughout the process! The color of the primer shouldn't be an influental factor unless you are not planning on using a sealer. If that is the case, use a primer that is close to the paint color. ie., dark paint - -dark primer. light paint - - light primer. You could probably get away with just 16 ounces of paint if all you are going to paint is the rocker panel. Otherwise, count on a bunch more! Just how much more? It depends! 1. What kind of spray equipment will be used? Conventional? HVLP? 2. What kind (brand) of paint will be used? 3. What color of paint will be used? Just a ball park figure - - a minimum of two quarts; a maximum of one gallon of paint. It's always better to have a little bit left over than to run out of paint while painting! Especially if it's a custom mix! |

Re: Paint
Hi Mike
I appreciate the compliment! Makes me feel good! I just found your website a few days ago while prowling around. I admire and respect anyone who is willing to take the time to ASK QUESTIONS!! Those are the kind of folks who will eventually succeed! In retrospect, perhaps we were both a bit too hasty in our assessment of rattle can primer. After all, it does make a really neat bug spray! Re: Paint
Hi Refinisher!
I agree totally! I don't think you would need two gallons of paint on anything unless you are painting a school bus or an airplane! I sorta doubt that much would be needed on a CRX! Even in a "ready to spray" mixture! However, when Mike said, "That goes for sealer, primer, base, and clear.", I'm betting he was referring to the total volume of all components! |

Re: Paint
I can see why you would think that...but thats kind of an odd way to talk about how much stuff you will need when painting. No one asks "how much paint will I need"...and gets an answer like "3 Gallons...1 gallon paint, 2 quarts of clear, 2 quarts reducer, 1 quart activator and so on..." so I see what your saying...but I have a feeling he just doesn't know what hes talking about.
Nothing against him....I just like to see people get good quality info. I help people every day with issues they have from mis-information so it gets to me sometimes.
